Bernard Lagat wins 5k at US Olympic Trials
The Arizona assistant is headed to Rio at 41 years of age
At 41 years old, Arizona volunteer assistant coach Bernard Lagat is heading to his fifth Olympic Games after winning the 5000 meters at the US Olympic Trials on Saturday evening.
Heading into the final 100 meters, Lagat found himself in third place, but made a huge charge down the final stretch, picking up the win and running his way to Rio.
According to FloTrack, this is the 8th time Lagat has taken the U.S. Championship in the 5k in his career.
It’s pretty crazy that a 41-year-old person can close a 5k like that to take home the title, but here we are.
Congrats to Bernard and there is yet another Wildcat to cheer for in Rio next month.
