Arizona football recruiting: Wildcats in great shape for Hunter Echols, two 2019 quarterbacks and Jaylon Johnson

A quick roundup to catch up on this week’s latest news

There was a whirlwind of Arizona Wildcats recruiting news that took place this weekend, so now it’s time to get all caught up.

Arizona is in contention to finish off their 2017 recruiting class with some of the most highly-talented recruits in the nation. I said in my last recruiting roundup that I don’t think it’s crazy to think that Arizona lands four top 100 recruits in this cycle. There are a few mentioned in this post, but for a quick run down on the remaining prospects and their status with Arizona, check out my last roundup.

Hunter Echols decommits from UCLA

So this is something I’ve been talking about for the last week or so. I’ve been told by many that Echols was bound to decommit from UCLA. I was also told by quite a few that Arizona is now in the driver’s seat for his services.

After his decommitment, he released a pretty hefty top 11. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that his top three are Arizona, Notre Dame and Oregon. He’s wanted an Ohio State offer, but they landed the third-ranked defensive end in the nation just hours after Echols decommitted.

Much like the corner situation, I feel confident that Arizona will land a 4-star defensive end. And I’m going to say that Echols just might be that guy. But, Arizona has other options with DJ Johnson in the fold as well.

Arizona offers 2019 dual-threat quarterbacks

The Wildcats are getting a head start on some quarterbacks for the 2019 class, which will be extremely beneficial come spring of 2019. Quarterbacks are always the first position to commit, typically because a school will only take one commitment and the recruit wants to keep their spot.

One offer went to Michael Johnson Jr., a 6-foot-3, 175 pound quarterback out of The King’s Academy (Sunnyvale, CA). He’s unranked as a high school sophomore, but holds offers to California, Florida State and Mississippi State.

The other offer went to David Baldwin, a 6-foot-2, 180 pound signal caller out of Upland High School, the same school as current UA running back commit Nathan Tilford. Baldwin currently holds offers to Colorado, Oregon State and Utah. Expect Arizona to make a huge push for Baldwin, who has close ties to Football Analyst Miguel Reveles.

Bruce Judson commitment watch

So Bruce Judson tweeted this on Friday.

Since I first talked to him in January he told me that he was going to announce on National Signing Day, which seemed realistic for a top 150 recruit. I’ve said before that he’s dropped in the rankings quite a bit and a handful of schools probably wouldn’t take his commitment.

Judson had been in Gainesville, FL all week and judging by his emoji choice, Florida was the school. However, he didn’t end up announcing his commitment and I learned that Florida would not take his commitment, with all signs pointing to USF.

Two of his best friends from Florida were all supposed to visit Arizona together. Robert Porcher went Nebraska, and Nick Smith just picked NC State. And at this point, I don’t think Judson is going to make it out to Arizona this summer.

He still hasn’t committed, but for now it seems like it’ll be USF. Pitt made a good run but I feel like they’re about to overload on running backs soon. Darrian McNeal committing could have certainly pushed Judson out of the picture for Arizona as well.

Jaylon Johnson releases top seven

A few weeks ago, Jaylon Johnson released a top 11 and included the Arizona Wildcats. He trimmed that down to seven, with the Wildcats making the cut once again.

I think Arizona gets an official visit out of him, cutting Cal and Utah, and it could turn into something. For now, the Cats are going to heavily pursue Thomas Graham, who seems to be down to Alabama. I’ve said before that Arizona will land a 4-star corner and I believe it will be Graham. But if that falls through, Jaylon Johnson is certainly a strong candidate.
