NCAA Baseball Tournament results: Arizona defeats Louisiana-Lafayette 3-1, advances to Super Regionals

The Wildcats' postseason will continue

Behind stellar pitching performances by Kevin Ginkel and Cameron Ming, the Arizona baseball team beat Louisiana-Lafayette 3-1 in a regional-deciding game.

Ginkel went 5.2 innings, allowing just four hits and one run while striking out three batters, and Cameron Ming took over from there, blanking Louisiana-Lafayette in the final 3.1 innings, and allowing just one baserunner in the process.

The Ragin' Cajuns lone run was via solo homer by Kyle Clement off Ginkel in the 4th inning.

After losing to Louisiana-Lafayette on Sunday morning, Arizona needed to win its next three games to win the Lafayette Regional and advance to the next round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Wildcats beat Sam Houston State in their first game, then defeated Louisiana-Lafayette in their second game. It set up a winner-take-all rematch against ULL, and the Wildcats' sense of urgency was apparent off the bat. Ginkel worked a scoreless top of the 1st, inducing three weak groundouts. Then, in the bottom half of the frame, the Wildcats would score a pair of runs.

Zach Gibbons hit a one-out single to left, and he'd score on a Ryan Aguilar RBI double. Aguilar lined one toward the right field line and ,rather than stopping at first, Aguilar tested the right fielder's arm and did so successfully.  And not only did he beat the throw, but the throw was low, and it skipped past the shortstop's glove and into left field. Gibbons, who would have had to stop at third without the error, was able to score and Aguilar would advance to third. Aguilar would later score on a wild pitch, giving Arizona an early 2-0 lead.

The Wildcats tacked on another run in the 2nd inning. Louis Boyd doubled down the left field line with one away in the inning and Cody Ramer, the very next batter, would single up the middle to bring him home.

That'd be the final run that Arizona would score, but that'd be enough thanks to the excellence of Ginkel and Ming.

The Wildcats will now head to Starkville, Mississippi for the Super Regionals. Mississippi State is the host.
