2016 MLB Draft results: Arizona OF Zach Gibbons selected in 17th round by Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

From undrafted to 17th round

Zach Gibbons was passed over by every MLB team 40 times last year.

This year, after one year under the new coaching staff, Gibbons was taken in the 17th round by the Los Angeles Angels.

Before the season, you could tell that the new atmosphere was exactly what Gibbons needed in his baseball life. He felt revitalized, telling me "I'm falling in love with the game again."

That renewed love for the game almost resulted in a Pac-12 Batting Title, with the battle coming down to the final day of the regular season. The Angels took the actual Pac-12 Batting Champ David Oppenheim in the 18th round. In the midst of Super Regional play, Gibbons is currently sitting at a .373 batting average.

Gibbons had plans of joining the Arizona coaching staff next year as an undergrad assistant, but now he'll probably be somewhere in the Angels farm system.

He is the first Arizona player drafted by the Angels since Jett Bandy was selected in the 31st round of the 2011 Draft. Bandy is currently on the Major League roster.

Congrats to Gibby. This was a long time coming.
