Arizona football recruiting: Recapping the Wildcats' latest Junior Day

Some recruiting updates after Junior Day this past weekend

The Arizona Wildcats held yet another Junior Day on campus this weekend, hosting recruits from all across the country including California, Nevada and Florida to name a few states.

The junior day from a few weeks ago had plenty of in-state guys, but led to no commitments. That wasn't the case for this junior day.

The weekend started off with a bang, landing a commitment from 3-star outside linebacker Tony Fields out of Desert Pines (Las Vegas, Nevada). Fields comes in as the 81st-ranked outside linebacker in the country, 13th in the west and 1st in the state of Nevada, according to Scout.

He held over 18 offers to the likes of Arizona State, BYU, Missouri and was in talks with Notre Dame.

This new staff is great at commitment reactions

Former USF receiver commits to Arizona

Arizona also landed another commitment, going a bit under the radar on this one. Zach Benjamin, a former USF wide receiver, pledged his commitment to continue his football career at Arizona. Again, credit this one to Jahmile Addae.

3-star safety Rhedi Short decommits from UCLA after visit

Rich Rodriguez is in pursuit of a now-former UCLA commit, with 3-star safety Rhedi Short. He was on campus and I got a chance to talk to him about his visit.

Short is a 3-star safety who had been committed to UCLA since October. Still, he took a trip to Arizona in March after one of his coaches suggested to go. He was back on campus this weekend, wanting his parents to check out the campus. He decommitted from UCLA this Sunday, one day after his visit to Tucson.

He's been in communication with almost every coach and this is a guy that Arizona seems to be going all in on.

Arizona offers Australian defensive end

Arizona offered Matt Leo, a 6-foot-7, 275 pound defensive end out of Arizona Western. The coaching staff has been quite fond of sending offers out to AWC, but have yet to land any of those prospects. Given Leo's size and Arizona's need at defensive line, this is one they'll pursue. When it came to guys like Travonte Valentine and Trey Lealaimatafao, you have to think it was their troubled past that held Arizona back. Here, it seems as if Leo just wanted to play some football and ended up at AWC.

Braxton Burmeister reconsidering Arizona

Braxton Burmeister was also on campus. I was able to talk to a Washington Husky insider to get a little more information on this situation. After taking visits to South Carolina, Indiana and Washington, Burmeister really liked what the Huskies had to offer, however, scheme fit is what he wants most.

That being said, many believe that Burmeister is bound to recommit to Arizona and rejoin the 2017 recruiting class. He's the No. 9 ranked dual-threat quarterback in the nation, adding yet another layer of intrigue to the quarterback group.

Sampson Niu on campus

A big-time linebacker in Sampson Niu was also on campus. He holds offers to USC, Notre Dame and Oregon. I'd be shocked if he didn't end up at USC, but things often change with USC commits as we've seen in the past.

Poutasi Poutasi makes trip from Las Vegas

A huge offensive lineman, also from Desert Pines, made the trip out to Tucson. Poutasi Poutasi is a 6-foot-4, 280 pound offensive guard with offers to Nevada and Louisville. He comes from a huge football family. He has one brother who goes to Oregon and another currently in the NFL with the Titans. He decided to commit to Louisville on Sunday.

4-star defensive tackle Greg Rogers

A big-time defensive tackle made his way to campus. He was part of a group that went to both Arizona and Arizona State this weekend. He's ranked 95th overall and fifth in the nation among all defensive tackles.

Elijah Blades watch

Elijah Blades chimed in after the commitment of Tony Fields. Florida is his dream school and they can sell him on the pro potential, but Kurtis Brown and company are also recruiting him hard to Arizona. He'll be looking for a summer time commitment sometime after he visits The Swamp.
