Sonoran Hot Reads: New Arizona Academic Center receives large contributions

A new building is coming to the Arizona campus, and coming soon

As Arizona looks to keep pace in the college athletics world, a new academic center will soon be standing across the street from McKale Center. After a $2.5 million donation from the Braccia family, and a $1 million donation from the Lapan family were announced on Wednesday, the $7.5 million C.A.T.S Academic Center is now ready for construction to begin. In fact, the ground-breaking ceremony is slated to take place at 4 PM on Friday. It should be a big boost for the academics side of Arizona Athletics.

Basketball

- Arizona is 21st in Jay Bilas' Top 68 teams. Oregon is 12th

- Pacific Takes has a few Arizona games among the top 12 remaining games in the conference this year

- The Pac-12's RPI is a thing of beauty

Utah took down Washington in a pretty important game for Arizona's place in the conference standings

Football

- Vince Amey was officially announced as the new defensive line coach. Reactions from the coaching world have been overwhelmingly positive. The fan world seems a lot more skeptical

- Amey and the rest of the staff are set to embark on a spring where the team will focus on individual fundamentals over team-related things

- The staff was also busy offering players, including No. 16 player overall Tyjon Lindsey, 2017 TE Bryce Wolma, and Jalen Harris, which Sammy Morrison approved of

- Scary moment at USC as Pat Haden had to be taken off on a stretcher after collapsing on campus. He's back to tweeting though:

Softball

- Softball begins the season on Thursday night. Here's our preview of the HIllenbrand Invitational. We will be bringing you a lot of softball coverage this year

Tucson news

- There's now video of a police officer shooting a man in Oro Valley this past September

- The new Marana Outlet Mall is hurting Foothills Mall business

- The new median decorations on Campbell are pretty unnecessary, and are apparently hurting business as well

- Arizona cities may be able to ban plastic bags soon
