Arizona Football Recruiting: A closer look at Devon Modster

The quarterback situation will be fun to watch in 2016

Devon Modster has high expectations to meet at Arizona and he hasn't even started his senior year of high school. This is the quarterback that Rich Rodriguez has been wanting. Not to say that Anu Solomon doesn't fit the mold, but there's certainly a lot more hype swirling around Modster.

Rich Rodriguez was close to landing 5-star Torrance Gibson, who ultimately ended up at Ohio State, and had the verbal commitment of Shea Patterson, 2016's No. 1 quarterback, who has since committed to Ole Miss.

Modster, 6-2 215lbs, is the No. 10 ranked pro-style quarterback in the nation, but has great mobility to allow him to command a Rich Rodriguez offense.

He's a dual-sport athlete who also plays basketball at Tesoro High School (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA). He came off the bench appearing in 28 of their 31 games, finishing with a record of 19-12. Modster averaged just 6.8 points, four rebounds and one steal per game.

But of course the football field is his natural habitat. He led Tesoro to a 9-3 record, finishing the season ranked 28th in the state of California and 274th in the nation. Modster completed 55% of his passes for 2,602 yards and rushed for 680 yards. He totaled 36 touchdowns (24 passing & 12 rushing) and threw just nine interceptions.

This is a current look at how the quarterback situation will look when he arrives to campus next summer.

Quarterback Year
Anu Solomon Redshirt Junior
Brandon Dawkins Redshirt Sophomore
Zach Werlinger Redshirt Sophomore
Devon Modster Freshman
Khalil Tate Freshman

No need to rush Modster here with Anu Solomon as the starter, giving him a year to redshirt and learn the system. It's hard to imagine Brandon Dawkins as a starter at any point in his career now, simply because of the youth that follows in Modster, Tate and Braxton Burmeister, who will enter in 2017. Anu Solomon could always leave early should he lead Arizona to another New Years Six Bowl, but we'll get to that when the time comes.
