Former Arizona baseball star Chip Hale added to Tigers coaching staff

Chip Hale had a short, fairly unspectacular Major League career as a player, but since moving into coaching he’s carved out a nice long tenure.

The latest stop on the former Arizona Wildcats star’s coaching journey will be with the Detroit Tigers, who announced Saturday Hale was joining new manager AJ Hinch’s staff as third base coach.

The 56-year-old Hale heads to Detroit after spending the previous three seasons as bench coach for the Washington Nationals, winning a World Series ring in 2019 (and even serving as interim manager for the last few innings of Game 6 after manager Davey Martinez was ejected).

Hale, who was manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2015-16 as well as Arizona’s Triple-A affiliate in Tucson from 2004-06, has also coached with the Oakland Athletics and New York Mets.

A UA standout from 1984-87, including on the 1986 College World Series title team, Hale was taken in the 17^th round of the 1987 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins. He made his pro debut with Minnesota in 1989 and played for the Twins through 1996 before finishing his playing career with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1997.
