Former Arizona golfer Jim Furyk wins second straight PGA Tour Champions event

The golf world was understandably focused on the U.S. Open this weekend, but it wasn’t the only professional tournament going on in America. While Bryson DeChambeau was making history in New York, a former Arizona Wildcats star was doing the same on the opposite coast.

Jim Furyk birdied the first playoff hole Sunday afternoon at Pebble Beach Golf Coursein California, beating Jerry Kelly to win the Pure First Championship. In doing so, the 50-year-old became the third golfer to win his first two PGA Tour Champions events, joining Arnold Palmer (1980) and Bruce Fleisher (1999).

Furyk, who was 12-under par for the 3-day tourney, also won the Ally Championship in Michigan in August in his debut on the tour for golfers 50 and up. Overall it was the 28^th professional tournament win, a list that features 17 PGA Tour victories including the 2003 U.S. Open and 2010 Tour Championship.

A member of Arizona’s 1992 NCAA title team, Furyk was a two-time All-American with the Wildcats.

Furyk wasn’t the only duffer with Arizona ties to do something notable on the links on Sunday. David Laskin, a senior on the UA men’s team, won the GCAA Amateur Series tournament at Marana’s Dove Mountain, firing a 4-under 68 in the final round to win by 12 strokes.

And earlier in the September, former Wildcat George Cunningham hit a hole-in-one during the Lincoln Land Championship on the Korn Ferry Tour in Illinois. Cunningham, who player for the UA from 2014-18, tied for 29^th place.
