The NCAA Board of Governors met Tuesday to discuss how the NCAA will proceed with its 22 fall championships, and it announced that an update will be provided Wednesday.

Some wondered if the NCAA would move to cancel fall championships, which would essentially postpone fall sports (except football) to a later date. But according to Stadium’s Brett McMurphy, the NCAA intends to allow each division (Divisions 1-3) determine the fate of its fall sports.

He notes that would be critical for Division I, which has a lot more at stake to play in the fall for monetary purposes. Some argue that it would be harder to justify holding a college football season in the fall if other fall sports like volleyball and soccer are deemed unsafe.

There has also been talk that the major conferences (Pac-12, SEC, Big 12, etc.) would hold their own fall championships if the NCAA opts to cancels theirs.

The Pac-12 still hasn’t announced its plans for Olympic fall sports, aside from saying they won’t start until Sept. 26 at the earliest and won’t practice until at least Aug. 15.

The Pac-12 announced its conference-only football schedule last Friday, but said sports like volleyball and soccer will receive their schedules at a later date.

Both Arizona soccer and volleyball are expected to report to campus to begin workouts on Aug. 10. The UA football team is already on campus.
