College coaches have been unable to have any in-person contact with recruits since mid-March, when the coronavirus pandemic brought everything to a halt. And it’s going to remain that way for at least two more months.
The NCAA on Thursday further extended its recruiting “dead period” through Aug. 31, adding another month to the end. During this time only phone calls and electronic correspondence are permitted.
The shutdown has wreaked havoc on the spring and summer evaluation periods for all sports, most notably basketball and football, which routinely have major showcase events and tournaments during these months.
Schools have also been unable since March to host recruits on campus, either officially or unofficially, or do home visits. Scholarship offers can still be made, as can commitments by prospects, as has been the case for the Arizona Wildcats in football as they’ve landed nine commits for the 2021 recruiting class since early May.
