The Arizona Wildcats were just about to enter Pac-12 play in baseball when sports came to a halt in mid-March. What might have happened after that, including a return to the postseason, is anyone’s guess.
When the UA and other Pac-12 baseball teams return to action in 2021—we hope—they’ll have another postseason goal to strive for: a conference tournament title.
Michael Lev of the Arizona Daily Star reported Thursday night that the Pac-12 is set to hold a conference baseball tourney for the first time starting in 2021. Scottsdale Stadium, the Spring Training home of MLB’s San Francisco Giants, is set to play host for the first three years.
No format has been approved, though in most other conferences their tourney is a double-elimination format similar to each stage of the NCAA Tournament.
Adding a Pac-12 tourney figures to only help the league when it comes to NCAA bids. Arizona, which hasn’t made the 64-team field since 2017, were among the first teams left out in both 2018-19 and could have benefited from a few extra games against top-tier competition. The 2019 squad won its final 10 games but most were against lesser competition.
