A big first weekend for the Arizona Wildcats has produced its first individual conference accolade for one of the league’s top players.

Sophomore catcher Austin Wells has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week following Arizona’s home sweep of Albany.

Wells, the reigning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, hit .545 with a home run and eight RBI, adding four doubles and four runs scored with five walks. He struck out just twice in 18 plate appearances as Arizona outscored the Great Danes 38-10 at Hi Corbett Field to extend its win streak to 13 games before losing to Minnesota in Tempe on Monday.

This is the second consecutive Player of the Week award for Arizona, with outfielder Justin Wylie earning the final honor of the 2020 season.

Arizona returns to action Friday when it plays in the Tony Gwynn Legacy tournament in San Diego. The Wildcats face Southern Illinois on Friday, Iowa on Saturday and Nebraska on Sunday.
