Ex-Arizona defensive coordinator Marcel Yates hired as Cal’s defensive backs coach

Marcel Yates’ days with the Arizona Wildcats are over, but his time in the Pac-12 is not.

The former UA defensive coordinator has been hired as the new defensive backs coach of the California Golden Bears, the program announced Saturday.

Yates was fired by the Wildcats in October, midway through his fourth season as DC, after a 41-31 loss to Stanford. Arizona allowed 35 points and over 469 yards per game under Yates’ direction in 2019.

Originally hired by Rich Rodriguez prior to the 2016 season, Yates was retained when Kevin Sumlin was tabbed as the new UA head coach. Under Yates, Arizona allowed 32.6 points per game in 2018 and 34.4 in 2017.

Yates coached linebackers and defensive backs during his time at Arizona. Before that he was the defensive coordinator at Boise State, and also had stints at Texas A&M and Montana State.

Cal is not on Arizona’s 2020 schedule, so Yates doesn’t have to worry about coaching against his former squad.
