How Arizona football’s commits fared in Week 4

The Arizona Wildcats finished nonconference play with a much-needed, and impressive, win against the Red Raiders of Texas Tech.

But before the great finish before conference play, UA had its future in action across the country at the prep level.

Read on to see how the members of Arizona’s 2020 class performed in their games last weekend.

Drake Dabney, TE

Cy Ranch (Cypress, TX) Mustangs: Won against Langham Creek, 53-7

Game Stats: Unknown

2019 Stats: 8 rec, 91 yds, 1 TD (stats incomplete)

I was unable to find any clips or stats for Dabney during his team’s shellacking of Langham Creek. However, well done by the Mustangs for bouncing back from last week and winning in a blowout.

Jalen John, RB

Lakeridge (Lake Oswego, OR) Pacers: Won against Clackamas, 47-28

Game Stats: 27 car, 345 yds, 4 TD; 1 rec, 20 yds, 1 TD

2019 Stats: 43 car, 444 yds, 4 TD; 3 rec, 77 yds, 1 TD

John put on a show this past weekend, plain and simple.

He showed that he is probably one of the most difficult players to tackle in the Pacific Northwest as he juked, jived and stiff armed his way through the Clackamas defense.

If I’m being honest, John reminds me a lot of Gary Brightwell when he runs, but with a great mix of J.J. Taylor ... maybe even Bam Smith. He showed great speed with very fluid lower body movements to weave his way through running lanes.

John broke off a great many long runs and they are definitely enjoyable to watch.

I’m just not sure if I’ve seen a running back run with the mix of power, speed, and movements/shiftiness he does.

Will Plummer, QB

Gilbert (AZ) Tigers: Won against Goldwater, 62-22

Game Stats: 15-for-24, 249 yds, 5 TD, 2 INT; 13 car, 133 yds, 2 TD

2019 Stats: 81-for-134, 1,070 yds, 10 TD, 7 INT; 49 car, 301 yds, 4 TD

Plummer had another really strong outing, probably his best of the season so far.

He showed amazing touch and arm strength on multiple deep throws during the game. But I’d have to say it’s his arm strength and accuracy he has when on the move that’s probably the most impressive part of his passing game.

There were multiple instances where he threw beautiful, accurate passes down the field for big plays.

His arm was not the only way he was making plays either. His ability to make defenders look silly with his legs is still the most underrated aspect of his game.

He is faster than he looks, and he showed it Friday night, gaining huge chunks of yards. There was even one instance where he lowered his shoulder, bounced off a defender, and kept going for a few more yards.

One of the most impressive plays is where he had a defender in his face. He took off to his left, saw an open lane to the right, sprinted all the way across the field to the right sideline, and proceeded to pick up the first down. He had to have run about 100-yards on that play.

Plummer will have to limit his interceptions in the future, but so far I’m loving what I’m seeing as far as his development goes.

Alphonse Oywak, CB

Kentwood (Covington, WA) Conquerors: Lost to Mount Si, 28-20

Game Stats: 1 PBU; 1 rec, 35 yds, 0 TD (stats incomplete)

2019 Stats: 2 tackles, 1 PBU; 5 rec, 133 yds, 1 TD (stats incomplete)

The stats weren’t updated for Oywak at the time of me writing this article, so I had to go off of his short highlights from the game.

In the first play, Oywak runs a really great route and makes an incrediblly athletic play on a ball that was overthrown.

In the last play, he did a great job of reading the QB’s eyes and making a play on the ball. He was very close to snagging his first interception of the year but made a great play regardless.

Dion Wilson Jr., DE

Orange Vista (Perris, CA) Coyotes: Lost to El Monte, 35-6

Game Stats: Unknown

2019 Stats: 12 tackles, 7.0 TFL, 1.0 sack, 1 forced fumble (stats incomplete)

I wasn’t able to find any stats or even DE film for Wilson during this game. However, his highlights showcase his power and aggression at the TE position.

Almost every play, if not every play, you see him driving his opponent into the ground and smothering him. Got to love that type of physicality when it comes to blocking and Wilson does play d-end with that same type of fire.

Woody Jean, OL

Deerfield Beach (FL) Bucks: Won against Zachary, 53-0

Game Stats: Unknown

I was unable to find any clips of Jean during Deerfield Beach’s second straight victory, as the Bucks easily disposed of the Louisiana-based Zachary team.

Of note, Deerfield Beach’s first victory came over Blanche Ely High School on September 7th. The Bucks won 42-0. That game was not found at the time that I wrote the article for Week 3. For that I apologize and wanted to correct the mistake.

It’s been a great two game stretch for DB as they approach this weekend for a third straight win.

Josh Baker, OL

Eureka (MO) Wildcats: Won against Hazelwood Central, 24-0

Game Stats: Unknown

Baker and his Wildcat team pulled off another shutout this past weekend, easily defeating Hazelwood Central 24-0.

Of note, so far this season, Baker has been playing left tackle for Eureka.

With every week that passes, I become more and more impressed with how solid Baker is. He has phenomenal technique and is disruptive. In one play near the end of his highlights, he engaged his first opponent just long enogh to slow him down before seamlessly transitioning to the his next target. This gave his QB plenty of time to throw a nice ball down the field to a wide open receiver, who eventually ran it in for a touchdown.

For me, though, I can’t get over how athletic and explosive he is at the snap. You blink and he’s all the way across the field blocking on a pull. Just very impressive for someone his size. He will need to add more weight once he arrives on campus. Let’s hope that won’t slow him down.

Dyelan Miller, WR

Centennial (Peoria, AZ) Coyotes: Won against Vail Cienega, 38-14

Game Stats: 4 rec, 76 yds, 2 TD

2019 Stats: 9 rec, 111 yds, 2 TD

Miller had his best game of the season just down the road from where he will be playing his college ball.

His night did not start his night off on a great foot as we fumbled the ball after catching a screen and attempting to gain yardage. The ball was picked up by the Bobcat defense and gave themselves great field position to start their drive.

However, that was his only blemish of the evening.

He made a fantastic 44-yard, in-stride touchdown catch to make up for his fumble. It was a beautifully thrown ball too, dropping over his shoulder and into his bread basket.

He went on to snag another touchdown pass as the Coyotes cruised past Cienega.

Khary Crump, CB

Culver City (CA) Centaurs: Won against Warren, 56-28

Game Stats: 4 tackles, 1 INT, 1 PBU

2019 Stats: 12 tackles, 2 INT, 2 PBU, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery

Crump had another solid game for Culver City this past weekend.

He came up with another interception and added another PBU to the sheet.

I was unable to find any film of him from the game, but his stats show that he is continuing to make plays on the ball and that he is continuing to showcase the skills that made Demetrice Martin recruit him in the first place.

Tyler Loop, K/P

Lovejoy (Lucas, TX) Leopards: Won against Frisco Memorial, 42-14

Game Stats: Unknown

2019 Stats: Unknown

Loop and his Leopard squad notched their second win of the season this past weekend. I wish I could find highlights that I can share here, because this kid has a great leg.

He can kick and punt and is great at both. One play of his I saw from his first game this season was a beautiful rugby-style punt that pinned the opposing Colleyville Heritage team inside their own 5-yard line.

Kameron Hawkins, LS

Orange Lutheran (Orange, CA) Lancers: Lost to Narbonne, 38-0

Hawkins and the Lancers did not have the outcome they wanted as they were blanked by Narbonne.

I was unable to find any film of Hawkins snapping for this game but I was able to find highlights from his first game of the season against Centennial.

Hawkins is a very consistant snapper who has nice zip to his snaps, sending the ball back quickly to the punter or holder. This gives the punter/kicker some additional time before any rush gets home.

I like Hawkins’ hustle too as he starts blocking for his punter right away or bolts down the field on punt coverage.

The need for a consistent snapper cannot be overstated and I think Hawkins will make another great addition to that room.

Offensive lineman Cedric Melton and his Klein Cain Hurricane team had a bye week this past weekend. They will be in action this Friday, Sept. 20, against the Klein Bearkats.
