How Arizona football’s commits fared in Week 2

How did the 2020 class fare in their second week of action?

Week 2 of the high school football season has passed with the majority of the 2020 commits for the Arizona Wildcats in action.

Meanwhile, the ‘Cats had a bye as they prepare for their home opener against Northern Arizona.

Read on to see how the future Wildcats performed.

Drake Dabney, TE

Cy Ranch Mustangs (Cypress, TX: 1-0): Won against Cinco Ranch, 44-3

Game Stats: 1 reception, 25 yards, 1 TD (stats are incomplete)

Season Stats: 1 reception, 25 yards, TD (stats are incomplete)

Saturday night saw Arizona’s highest rated recruit in action, as the Mustangs easily handed Cinco Ranch an L.

Dabney had a nice 25-yard touchdown catch as his QB extended the play with his legs. Dabney shows nice concentration and good hands as he snags the pass.

Will Plummer, QB

Gilbert Tigers (Gilbert, AZ: 1-1): Won against Cactus Shadows, 30-14

Game Stats: 17-for-27, 212 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT; 12 carries, 66 yards, 1 TD

Season Stats: 41-for-64, 514 yards, 4 TD, 4 INT; 28 carries, 167 yards, 1 TD

The more I watch Plummer play, the more I realize how underrated he is. He is a true sleeper in the state. His ability to make plays with his legs continues to impress, and he made plenty on Friday night, including a 45-yard TD run.

As for his arm, it’s still as strong as ever. He did a fantastic job, for the most part, of putting his passes to spots only his receivers could get to. So far through two games, it is apparent that Plummer has taken a step forward this offseason, and his work will continue to show.

But that’s not all. We have defensive clips of Plummer! He is a gritty football player, as seen in his highlights below as he comes up and makes plays from his safety position. He hits hard and is a pretty solid tackler. Shoot, there’s even a play where he returns a punt.

All in all, another solid outing for Plummer as the Tigers get their first win of the season.

Dion Wilson, DE

Orange Vista Coyotes (Perris, CA: 2-0): Won against Colton, 46-6

Game Stats: 5 tackles, 3.0 TFL, 1.0 sack, 1 forced fumble

Season Stats: 9 tackles, 7.0 TFL, 1.0 sack, 1 forced fumble

I wasn’t able to find game highlights for Wilson but I did find some 15 second clips showing multiple plays throughout the game.

Wilson is definitely the biggest player on the field and it is quite impressive, but it’s his play that I really like. He is extremely aggressive and that is something you need in a d-end.

I was able to watch two clips where he made impressive plays. In the first play, he showed great hand technique to bypass the blocker and close in on and take down the ball carrier for a big loss.

The second play was even more surprising. When the ball is snapped he does of a great job of recognizing the QB rolling to his (Wilson’s) right, disengages, and pursues. The amazing thing was the incredible burst of speed he used to close on the QB, who panicked and Wilson was able to cause a fumble that was recovered by the Coyote defense.

He is another player I’m excited to watch develop as the year progresses.

Woody Jean, OL

Deerfield Beach Bucks (Deerfield Beach, FL: 0-2): Lost to St. John’s, 52-30

Game Stats: N/A

I wasn’t able to find any highlights for Jean but found one clip. In it, Jean does a good job setting up his base during a blitz and does a solid job of engaging his opponent and knocking him away from the play. During the play, Deerfield’s QB is rolling to Jean’s right. Jean knocks to the defender to his left, into another defender, and taking him out of the play.

Josh Baker, OL

Eureka Wildcats (Eureka, MO: 0-1): Lost to Fort Zumwalt West, 23-22

Game Stats: N/A

Baker is going to be a good one. He has a nasty side to his game and that came out this weekend as his Wildcat team took the field against FZW.

His feet are always active and you see him drive his opponent into the ground on multiple occasions, taking them completely out of the play.

He is also very athletic for someone his size. During two plays, you see him at the left tackle spot and become a pulling tackle. He gets over to the other side of the line quickly and aggressively engages his opponent.

I’m eager to see more of Baker this season, but so far it’s easy to see why Kyle DeVan wants him on the team next year.

Khary Crump, CB

Culver City Centaurs (Culver City, CA: 1-0): Won against Torrance West, 56-36

Game Stats: N/A

Season Stats: N/A

I was unable to find any film for Crump during Culver City’s victory. He did not record any stats during their game.

Cedric Melton, OL

Klein Cain Hurricanes (Houston, TX: 1-0): Won against Cypress Park, 56-27

Game Stats: Hurricanes rushed for 336 yards and 3 TDs. Only gave up 3 tackles for loss

Melton and the entire offensive line had themselves a great game. As you can see from the stats above, they did a phenomenal job.

As for Melton, he definitely looks like he got stronger during the offseason and he has added some muscle to his big 6-foot-5 frame.

Flipping on the film, he shows an impressive and powerful punch at the point attack and it definitely knocks the defender off balance. It’s also nice to see he hasn’t lost his athleticism and quickness with the added muscle.

More importantly, he looks like he has worked on his technique in the offseason. It is a stark difference from last year where he looked raw. He looks more poised, refined, and that is an encouraging sight.

Melton should only get better as the season rolls on.
