Ka’Deem Carey has career performance in CFL rivalry game

The NFL didn’t pan out for Ka’Deem Carey, though it’s arguable he wasn’t given a fair shake by the team that drafted him in 2013.

But that league’s loss appears to be the Canadian Football League’s gain, as Arizona’s all-time rushing leader is making the most of his playing time north of the border. That continued Monday when he had the best game of his professional career.

Carey had ran for 143 yards and two touchdowns for the Calgary Stampeders in their 25-9 home win over the rival Edmonton Eskimos in the CFL’s annual Labour Day Classic game. The contest was also billed as the “Battle of Alberta” since it featured the two teams from that province.

It was the first 100-yard game Carey has had since leaving Arizona after his junior season. He was taken by the Chicago Bears in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft and appeared in 38 games for the Bears from 2014-16. Only one was a start, and in those three seasons he had just 111 yards for 443 yards and two scores.

In five games with the Stampeders this season, Carey has run for 347 yards and averaged 6.5 yards per carry. He also has a touchdown on a fumble return after blocking a punt earlier in the season.

Carey ran for 4,239 yards and 48 TDs, both Arizona career school records, from 2011-13. He also holds the single-season rushing record of 1,929 set in 2012.
