Former UA pitcher Kevin Ginkel to be called up by Diamondbacks

Former Arizona Wildcats right-hander Kevin Ginkel, who is putting up ridiculous numbers in the minor leagues, is being called up by the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.

A baseball source says #Dbacks will DFA Zack Godley and call up RHP Kevin Ginkel from Triple-A Reno today.

This will be Ginkel’s first time in the big leagues. The 25-year-old has split the 2019 season between Double-A Jackson and Triple-A Reno. All together, he has a 1.78 ERA in 35.1 innings. The most impressive stat is that he has struck out 63 batters this season, giving him a strikeout rate of 16.0 Ks per nine innings. He had been serving as Reno’s closer.

The Diamondbacks are 16th in the MLB in bullpen ERA, and only have one reliever with an ERA below 4.00, so Ginkel has a real chance to carve out a major role with the club if he continues to pitch the way he has in the minors.

Ginkel was a 22nd-round pick by the Diamondbacks in the 2016 MLB Draft. He spent one season at the UA, where he posted a 2.80 ERA in 64.1 innings, being used as a starter and reliever as the Wildcats advanced to the College World Series championship series, where they lost to Coastal Carolina.
