3-star defensive end Robert Wooten decommits from Arizona

Arizona’s top-ranked commit has reopened his recruitment

After running on a heater the last few weeks in recruiting, the Arizona Wildcats have ran into a major problem as their highest ranked prospect, Robert Wooten, announced his decision to decommit from the program on Tuesday.

A 6-foot-3, 240 pound defensive end, Wooten is the No. 568 player in the country and a top-20 defensive end, according to 247Sports composite rankings.

“This is a life-changing decision that I feel I need to take more time on,” he wrote on Twitter.

Wooten has taken official visits to Missouri, SMU and Texas Tech, and also holds offers to Arizona State, Arkansas, Utah, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin, among others. It’s unclear whether Arizona will remain a top choice when Wooten is ready to commit once again, or if there are any new schools that have recently appeared on his radar.

It’s a huge blow to what was shaping up to be a solid class for the Wildcats. Wooten would have been a mighty defensive end that could dominate the Pac-12. This now leaves Arizona with just one defensive commitment, cornerback Khary Crump.

This also drops Arizona’s recruiting class back down to 11th in the Pac-12 and 82nd overall in the nation. Tight end Drake Dabey now becomes Arizona’s highest-ranked commitment of the class, checking in at No. 760 overall.

Arizona currently has eight scholarships tied up for the 2020 class, and will look to go all in on four-star defensive end Jason Harris throughout the remainder of his process.
