White Sox pick Arizona pitcher Avery Weems in 6th round of 2019 MLB Draft

A fourth Arizona baseball player has been selected in the 2019 MLB Draft, this one a bit of a surprise considering his up-and-down performance in the spring and his college status.

Left-handed pitcher Avery Weems was taken by the Chicago White Sox in the sixth round on Tuesday, marking the second player with ties to the Wildcats to get selected by the ChiSox. Incoming freshman pitcher Andrew Dalquist went to Chicago in the third round earlier Tuesday.

Weems was 4-5 with a 7.18 ERA for Arizona in 2019, his senior year, making eight starts and 27 appearances with 47 strikeouts in 61.2 innings. It was his second season with the program, going 2-3 with a 5.69 ERA in 2018 after transferring from Yavapai Community College in northern Arizona.

As a senior, Weems lacks the leverage to be able to return to college, making Chicago’s choice to draft him so high notable. His draft spot, 170^th, comes with a bonus value of $296,400, though the White Sox may attempt to offer less for him to sign and use the savings to sweeten offers to other draftees like Dalquist.

Weems is the fourth member of Arizona’s 2019 roster to be drafted so far. The others are infielder Cameron Cannon (second round, Boston Red Sox), third baseman Nick Quintana (second round, Detroit Tigers) and outfielder Matt Fraizer (third round, Pittsburgh Pirates).
