Arizona baseball signee Andrew Dalquist taken by White Sox in 3rd round of MLB Draft

The Arizona Wildcats may be losing one of their top incoming freshmen after pitcher Andrew Dalquist was picked by the Chicago White Sox in the third round of the 2019 MLB Draft on Tuesday.

A 6-foot-2, 170-pound right-hander from Redondo Beach, Calif., Dalquist went 9-0 with a 1.78 ERA during his senior year of high school. That elevated him to the No. 65 overall prospect in the draft, according to MLB.com.

“He’s probably the most dominant high school arm I’ve seen in a long, long time,” Redondo Beach HS coach Andy Diver told The Daily Breeze.

As the No. 81 pick, Dalquist’ approximate bonus value is $755,300. If he ends up signing with the White Sox he’ll be the fifth prep recruit Arizona coach Jay Johnson has lost to the MLB in his four years at the school. Last year the Wildcats saw outfielder Nolan Gorman and lefty Matthew Liberatore both sign as first-round picks.
