Two Arizona softball commits make USA Today’s All-USA High School Team

Carlie Scupin and Jesse Fontes. two 2020 recruits committed to the Arizona Wildcats, made USA Today’s All-USA Softball Second Team.

Scupin, who attends nearby Tucson High, hit .683/.783/1.730 in her junior season, with 17 home runs, 11 doubles, and 41 RBI.

Fontes, a right-hander who attends Grace Brethren High in Simi Valley, California, had a 0.36 ERA in 136.1 innings, striking out 264 batters. She also hit .530 with seven home runs, 36 RBI, and 10 doubles.

A 6-foot first baseman, Scupin should be an immediate impact player for the Wildcats in 2021, as they will be losing several key hitters to graduation prior to that season, including Jessie Harper, Alyssa Palomino-Cardoza, Reyna Carranco, Malia Martinez and possibly Dejah Mulipola if she does not make the Olympic Team in 2020.

Scupin was also the 2018-19 Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year.

Our Kim Doss took a look at what’s ahead for the Wildcats in the next three years. We also broke down what is ahead in the immediate future for Arizona, which is coming off its first Women’s College World Series appearance since 2010.
