Arizona baseball downs USC in suspended game

Wildcats and Trojans set to play another one Sunday, weather permitting

After a storm of “biblical-proportions” postponed Saturday night’s Arizona baseball game in the middle of the second inning, the Wildcats eventually defeated the USC Trojans 8-5 when play resumed Sunday afternoon at Hi Corbett Field.

The second game of a weekend series between the two schools resumed with Arizona trailing 3-1, and the Wildcats (24-24, 12-14 Pac-12) used a solid pitching performance from Quinn Flanagan and yet another big offensive output to outscore USC 7-2 on Sunday to claim their second straight victory over the Trojans

Flanagan (6-3) got the win, throwing 5.1 innings and allowing just five hits, two runs and two walks while striking out four.

In such a weird situation, coach Jay Johnson couldn’t have asked for any more from the freshman lefty.

Offensively, six different Wildcats finished with RBIs in the victory, with the freshman duo of Dayton Dooney and Ryan Holgate leading the way with two each. Holgate tied the game with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third, his sixth big fly of the season.

Nick Quintana, Tony Bullard, Justin Wylie and Branden Boissierre also chipped in with an RBI apiece.

The series finale against the Trojans was set to get underway 45 minutes after the conclusion of the game, but coincidentally weather has put the game into a delay.
