Analyzing new Arizona football commit Kyon Barrs

We take a look at the 2019 defensive tackle

The Arizona Wildcats landed a late addition to the 2019 recruiting class in Murrieta Mesa (Calif.) defensive tackle Kyon Barrs.

School/Hometown: Murrieta Mesa High School (Murrieta, Calif.)

Brandon Combs: Don’t let the rankings fool you, Barrs was one of the best defensive tackles in California for 2019. The reason for his low ranking equates to the academic issues he had and the subsequent lack of recruiting interest.

Bottom line, Barrs has talent...and lots of it. When turning on his film the first thing that stands out to me is how he uses his hands. It is his most effective attribute. He violently sheds blocks with his hands and starts creating havoc in the backfield. Couple that with his incredibly quick first step and explosiveness, which are other aspects of his game that stand out, and he’s dangerous.

He has power as well and is only going to get stronger in a college weight program.

As mentioned above, academic issues kept him from signing in December or February. Those issues seem to have been remedied and he is set to join Arizona for fall camp. I’m interested to see how much time, if any, he sees this season given UA’s lack of depth along the defensive line. Barrs does have the versatility to play along the whole defensive line. That type of flexibility should come into play.

Gabe Encinas: This commitment adds the much needed depth on the defensive line and it comes as a pleasant surprise given the timing. For me this is all about the value.

Overall he had a very high level of production as a defensive lineman and the accolades followed. It shows that he is dominating competition up front, playing Southern California’s Division 3, which seems to be pretty good in the grand scheme of things.

He has good size, seems pretty athletic, has good quickness and finishes plays. He could play either defensive tackle or nose guard, preferably defensive tackle, and he can add some muscle to his frame or pack on the pounds depending on what the staff wants him to do.

It was clear that Arizona needed to add another piece on the line just for some insurance. I think this is great value for what you’re getting just a few weeks before he has to report to campus. I think the talent is there, the only reason why he was sitting for so long was because of an SAT score.

He’s not raw, he’s not someone who needs time to develop as a project. He comes in immediately with a pretty strong skill set and depending on injuries he might have to get into the trenches as a true freshman. But over time given with what Coach Uiagaleilei was able to show in his first year, I think Barrs could be a potential starter down the road, even if we see a spike in recruiting in the following years.
