3 former Arizona players sign first NFL contracts

PJ Johnson, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles and Shawn Poindexter got that money.

A trio of standouts from last year’s Arizona Wildcats team have officially signed their first professional football contracts, finally getting paid to play the sport they’ve devoted much of their lives to.

Defensive tackle PJ Johnson, safety Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles and wide receiver Shawn Poindexter have all inked multi-year deals, according to Spotrac’s online contract database.

Johnson, who was taken by the Detroit Lions in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft, signed a 4-year contract worth up to $2.6 million. He received a $96,148 signing bonus—the only money he’s guaranteed—and will earn a base salary of $495,000 during his rookie year, rising to $765,000 in his fourth season in 2022.

Flannigan-Fowles and Poindexter, both undrafted free agents, each signed three-year contracts with the San Francisco 49ers that are worth up to $1.76 million. Flannigan-Fowles got a $12,500 signing bonus and a guaranteed payout of at least $62,500, while Poindexter got a $5,000 signing bonus and is guaranteed $25,000; both can make up to $495,000 during their rookie seasons.
