Wildcat Wrap: Jemarl Baker visits Arizona, several UA teams continue postseason play

It’s Monday which means it’s time to recap everything that surrounded the Arizona Wildcats last week. Let us know in the comment section if we missed anything.

Football

• Legendary Arizona and college football coach Dick Tomey died Friday night after battling lung cancer. Tomey, 80, coached at UA from 1987-2000 and won 95 games in his decorated career, more than any other coach in program history.
• Former players, coaches, media personnel, and UA alum took to social media to share their memories of Tomey.
• Tomey also coached at Hawaii and San Jose State. His career coaching record was 183-145-7 over 29 seasons.
• Sporting News listed Khalil Tate as a top-25 quarterback.
• Junior college recruit J.J. Liava’a did a Q & A with us about his recruitment process.
• UA coach Kevin Sumlin was named the 40th best head college football coach by CBS.

Softball

• Arizona (42-12, 19-5 Pac-12) capped its regular season in style by winning the series against archrival UCLA.
• The ‘Cats won Thursday and Saturday’s games, with Taylor McQuillin (20-7) and Gina Snyder (5-0) getting W’s. Thursday’s win came against Rachel Garcia, who was named Pac-12 Player and Pitcher of the Year earlier in the week.
• Alyssa Palomino-Cardoza had a game to remember against Garcia that included a timely home run to a SportsCenter top-10 worthy catch in centerfield. She was later named Pac-12 Player of the Week.
• The series win for the ‘Cats adds another chapter to the best rivalry in college softball.
• Despite not playing in the series, Reyna Carranco was crowned the Pac-12 batting champion, ending the season with 68 hits and a .433 average. Carranco is recovering from a broken hand and thumbs after being hit by a pitch against Washington a couple weeks ago. It is unclear if she will play this season.
• Arizona makes its 33rd straight NCAA tourney appearance as the No. 6 seed in the Tucson Regional and faces Harvard on Friday. Auburn and Colorado State are the two other teams in the regional. UA has reached at least the Super Regional round every year since 2014, but the Wildcats’ last WCWS trip came in 2010.
• We caught up Caitlin Lowe, a four-time All-American outfielder and two-time national champion, who is now relishing life as an assistant coach.
• Here is what you need to know about the softball team as it ventures into postseason.

Women’s Golf

• The defending national champions are back in the NCAA Championships after placing second in the NCAA Regionals during the week.
• Yu-Sang Hou, Haley Moore and Bianca Pagdanganan placed in the top-10 at regionals.
• The championships begin Friday in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Baseball

• After losing to Arizona State 10-7 on Tuesday, the ‘Cats (24-24, 12-14 Pac-12) rebounded with two wins over USC over the weekend.
• Arizona won Friday’s meeting 12-4 and game two 8-5. Game two was played on Sunday because of weather postposing Saturday’s game.
• Sunday was supposed to be a doubleheader, but upon completion of game one, UA announced the final game was canceled. The canceled game could hinder Arizona’s already slim postseason hopes.
• Nick Quintana was named Pac-12 Player of the Week after driving in 11 runs and scoring nine in the series against Oregon. He was also named Rawlings Sports College Player of the Week.
• The ‘Cats host Sam Houston State for a doubleheader Monday, and then head across the country to play Penn State on Thursday-Saturday.

Men’s Golf

• Arizona hit the links Monday morning in Louisville, Kentucky to open the NCAA Regionals. The ‘Cats are a nine seed and need to finish in the top-five to advance to the championships.
• Trevor Werbylo, David Laskin, Ethan Marcus, Brad Reeves, Briggs Duce, and Santeri Lehesmaa are the UA golfers slanted to participate.

Soccer

• The WPSL, a summer league for college and prep players, kicked off this week with four games. One of them included the San Diego Surf, who feature Arizona forwards Brooke Wilson and Jill Aguilera and midfielder Iyana Zimmerman, and are coached by former UA assistant Kate Norton.
• Wilson scored one of the Surf’s four goals in their win over ASC San Diego, picking up right where she left off in UA’s spring season.

Volleyball

• Coach Dave Rubio’s contract was extended through the 2023 season. Rubio has been at UA for 27 years and has 512 wins, 20 NCAA Tournament appearances, eight Sweet 16s, four Elite Eights, and a Final Four appearance.

Track and Field

• Jordan Geist won the Pac-12 shot put title on Saturday night for the second-straight year at the Pac-12 Championships.
• Bailey Roth placed second in the 3K steeplechase with a time of 8:50.07.
• The event was delayed for over three hours because of inclement weather.

Men’s Basketball

• Andre Iguodala scored a playoff-high 17 points to help the Golden State Warriors beat the Houston Rockets to advance to the Western Conference Finals.
• Kentucky overtook Arizona for the No. 1 recruiting class for 2019.
• “Sean’s our coach,” said UA president Dr. Robert Robbins to a Tucson TV station. This was in response to ending of the federal basketball trial.
• Along with the football program, men’s basketball was near the bottom of the Pac-12 in APR.
• Brandon Randolph wasn’t invited to the NBA Scouting Combine.
• Kentucky transfer Jemarl Baker visited Arizona. There were rumors that Nevada transfer Jordan Brown was on campus too.
