Wildcat Wrap: Arizona’s women’s teams are thriving

It’s Monday, so it’s time to recap another week of all things Arizona Wildcats. Let us know in the comment section if we missed anything.

Women’s Basketball

• Arizona beat Northwestern to win the WNIT and sold out McKale Center in the process.
• Our Kim Doss looked at what this title run mean for the program.
• The full postgame press conference can be watched here.
• Arizona fans should be proud of the way they supported Adia Barnes and company. The team certainly deserved it.
• Aari McDonald was named an AP Honorable Mention All-American. Nobody in Arizona history — male or female — has scored more points in a season than she did this year.

Softball

• The Wildcats absolutely destroyed Utah, scoring 48 runs in a three-game sweep of the Utes. That is the most runs UA has ever scored in a series. Malia Martinez drove in 18 runs.
• Arizona improved to 32-7 overall and 12-0 in the Pac-12. The Wildcats have won 14 in a row and are outscoring their opponents 136-13 in that stretch. They are seventh in RPI.
• Before the drubbing of Utah, Arizona got a chance to empty its bench in a Wednesday doubleheader sweep of UTEP.
• Arizona is pitching at an elite level again, and here is why.
• UA takes a break from conference play this weekend with a trip to Phoenix to play Grand Canyon. Last month, GCU was the first team to beat No. 1 Florida State. The Lopes are 26-14 this season.
• We caught up with former All-American Mo Mercado to see what life is like as a graduate assistant.

Baseball

• The ‘Cats ended their seven-game losing streak by sweeping Washington, a huge series for an Arizona team that was floundering.
• The Wildcats are now 16-14 overall and 5-7 in the Pac-12 as it heads to Phoenix to play GCU on Tuesday, before a home series against Cal.

Women’s Golf

• Haley Moore was among 30 women to make the cut in the inaugural Augusta National Women’s Amateur over the weekend. Moore placed seventh after shooting even-par.
• Yu-Sang Hou and soon-to-be Wildcat Vivian Hou played the first two rounds of the tournament, but missed the cut by a shot.
• Before Moore became a national champion at the UA, she had to endure bullying in grade school.
• Bianca Pagdanganan was named Pac-12 Golfer of the Month.
• The team plays in the Pac-12 Championship next Monday-Wednesday.

Men’s Tennis

• Arizona got its first conference win since 2014 with a 4-0 over Washington on Friday. It’s also the first win over UW since 2003.
• News broke on Sunday morning of the passing of former coach Bill Wright. Wright was the coach from 1986-2005 and is in the ITA Tennis Hall of Fame.

Soccer

• Sandy Davison was named the new assistant coach. Davison spent last season in the same position at Indiana. She was an assistant for four seasons at Washington State.
• Arizona continued spring season Sunday by routing New Mexico, 4-1. Brooke Wilson had a hat trick, which was a big confidence boost for the star freshman, who missed most of the 2018 season with a broken leg.
• Arizona wraps up its spring season Saturday at GCU.
• The Wildcats practiced in the Davis Sports Center for the first time Friday. Here is what midfielder Emily Knous had to say about that:

Beach Volleyball

• The Wildcats went undefeated in Tempe, with wins over Abilene Christian, No. 7 Cal Poly, Utah and ASU.
• Arizona, ranked 14th in the country last week, is currently 17-4. Natalie Anselmo and Madison Rigdon are 13-0 as a duo.

Women’s Tennis

• The ‘Cats beat No. 42 Denver 4-3 on Saturday afternoon. It’s the second time this season UA has defeated a ranked team, and it’s the first time they’ve defeated two ranked teams in a season since 2014.
• UA hosts Oregon on Friday.

Track and Field

• The men’s and women’s team took third at the Jim Click Shootout. The men scored 134 and the women at 132.5. Jordan Geist was named the Men’s Athlete of the Meet, and James Smith set the Arizona freshman 400-meter hurdle record with a time of 50.29.
• The team is in San Diego on Friday for the Triton Invitational.

Gymnastics

• The GymCats fell to Iowa in the first round of NCAA Regionals, though five GymCats represented Arizona in round two of NCAA Regionals.

Men’s Basketball

• Justin Coleman will be staying with the Wildcats, but not as player. Coleman plans on being a graduate assistant with the team.
• Lute Olson was re-inducted into the Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.
• Arizona is interested in many transfers. Christian Keeling, Max Hazzard (brother of former UA walk-on Jacob Hazzard) and David Jenkins are the latest names UA is interested in.
• Former Arizona commit Jahvon Quinerly is transferring from Villanova

Football

• Spring ball is here, but so are the injuries, especially to the defensive line.
• Coach Kevin Sumlin provided updates on spring practice and the standouts so far.
• Malik Reed, a three-star linebacker, sat down for a Q&A with us.
• Connections got new OL coach Kyle DeVan to Arizona.
• DeVan will be coaching Donovan Laie, who is ready to build off his successful freshman season.
• Iona Uiagalelei, the DL coach, talks about the state of the position during the spring.
