Arizona baseball falls at home to Grand Canyon

The Arizona Wildcats dropped their fourth straight game on Tuesday night, losing 11-9 at home to Grand Canyon.

As has happened so many times this year, Arizona pitchers were unable to avoid the big inning, allowing nine runs between the third and fifth innings.

Avery Weems took the mound for the Wildcats (18-20) in a game entirely pitched by the bullpen. Weems only went 2.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits with two strikeouts, when Zach Sherman failed to record an out in relief of Weems.

Third pitcher Gil Luna finished the third and threw a perfect fourth before falling apart in the fifth. By the time he and Vince Vanelle were done it was 9-3 Grand Canyon.

On the offensive front, Arizona had two big innings of its own.

The Wildcats scored three runs in the fourth, with two coming on Nick Quintana’s ninth home run of the season and the other on a Ryan Holgate double.

Arizona’s offense came alive again in the eighth, this time for a five-run frame, to pull within 10-8, but could get no closer.

The Wildcats are away this weekend when they head to Stanford for a three-game set before returning to Hi Corbett Field next Tuesday against New Mexico State.
