Chicago Bulls shutting down ex-Arizona star Lauri Markkanen for remainder of season

It’s been a great sophomore year for Lauri Markkanen, albeit one that began late because of an elbow injury.

But following a medical scare on Tuesday night and no postseason play on the docket, the Chicago Bulls have decided to shut down the former Arizona standout for the final few games.

The 7-foot Markkanen played 16 minutes on Tuesday in Toronto before leaving with what was diagnosed as “an episode of a rapid heart rate and fatigue,” per Yahoo! Sports’ Shams Charania. He’d recorded 10 points and nine rebounds before his departure, coming up a rebound short of his 21st double-double in 52 games.

For the season Markkanen averaged 18.7 points and 9.0 rebounds on 43 percent shooting, hitting 36.1 percent of his three-pointers after missing the first 23 games. Those numbers are up from his rookie season when the seventh pick in the 2017 draft averaged 15.2 points and 7.9 rebounds in 68 games.

Markkanen played for the Arizona Wildcats in 2016-17, averaging 15.6 points and 7.2 rebounds as a freshman.
