Arizona interested in Alabama’s Kira Lewis Jr.

The star point guard entered the transfer portal after Avery Johnson was let go

The Alabama Crimson Tide have parted ways with head coach Avery Johnson, and now several players are following him out of the program.

One could be star freshman point guard Kira Lewis Jr., who has entered the transfer portal. Naturally, the suitors are lining up for a player of his caliber, and the Arizona Wildcats are included, according to Rivals’ Corey Evans.

The 6-foot-3 Lewis averaged 13.5 points and 2.9 assists this season, while shooting 43 percent from the field and 36 percent from 3, earning a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team. He was the No. 1 player out of the state of Alabama in 2018 and No. 39 in the country, per 247Sports composite rankings.

Lewis reclassified and was the second-youngest player in Division I basketball this season.

Arizona got an up-close look at Lewis on Dec. 9 when he scored 20 points, including the game-winning 3, in Alabama’s 76-73 victory in Tuscaloosa.

Lewis would have to sit out a season before having three years of eligibility at his new school should he decide to transfer. Nico Mannion is widely expected to be a one-and-done, so Lewis could take his spot once he is eligible to play.

That said, nearly every major-conference school is going to be interested in a player like Lewis, so it’s will take a concerted effort to bring him to Tucson.
