Wildcat Wrap: Arizona men’s and women’s basketball fall to ASU
Not a good week on the hardwood
It’s Monday so it is time to recap the week that was for the Arizona Wildcats.
Let’s dive in. Let us know in the comment section if we missed anything.
Women’s Basketball
- Arizona (14-7, 4-6 Pac-12) couldn’t overcome a molasses-like start to at Arizona State in a 60-47 loss. Aside from Aari McDonald, no other UA player scored double-digits. McDonald had 28 points, while Sam Thomas finished as the next leading scorer with 5 points.
- The ‘Cats get a few days off before they had to Washington. UA plays the Huskies on Thursday night, Washington State on Saturday.
Softball
- The season begins on Friday when Arizona takes on Michigan in the University of South Florida Invitational. The Wildcats’ team motto is “We Over Me” this season, which is fitting because their depth is their biggest strength.
- The eight-time national champions will be rocking Nike Vapor Hyper Elite 2.0 uniforms this season. There are six combinations that include classic and modern looks.
- Taylor McQuillin, Jessie Harper, Dejah Mulipola, and Alyssa Palomino were named to USA Today’s Player of the Year Top-50 watch list.
- The ‘Cats were ranked seventh in the inaugural Softball America Preseason rankings.
Women’s Golf
- The defending national champions started their season on Sunday in California in the Grumman Regional Challenge. UA finished seventh on day one of the challenge at 19-over, battling some harsh conditions.
Baseball
- The team will hold its Meet the Team event on Friday at Hi Corbett at 5 p.m. A scrimmage will take place at 6 and at the end of the game fans will get to autographs from players.
Hockey
- The ‘Cats on ice remain in first place in the WCHL standings. UA swept Colorado State and Colorado. Anthony Cusanelli and Bayley Marshall scored their 100th career points against CU. The team heads to Las Vegas to play UNLV on Friday and Saturday.
Soccer
- The 2019 recruiting class received some recognition from TopDrawerSoccer as one of the best in the country.
- The Wildcats kick off their spring season on Feb. 23.
Men’s Golf
- One team was able to beat ASU this week, as the team started off the season off well by winning the Arizona Intercollegiate title on Tuesday. It’s the second year in-a-row the team has taken home the title.
- The team heads to Hawaii for the John Burns Intercollegiate on Feb. 21.
Swimming and Diving
- The program was placed on two years’ probation and lose one scholarship for the 2021 season after it was found that a former diving coach committed multiple recruiting violations.
- The men and women’s teams lost their meets in Austin, Texas in a Tri-Meet.
- UA hosts ASU on Saturday for senior day and the last home meet of the season.
Track and Field
Football
- Kyle DeVan was hired as the new offensive line coach. He previously was at Ball State at the same position since 2016.
- Former four-star prospect Michael Eletise is in the process of entering the NCAA transfer portal. Eletise would make seven UA players entering the portal.
- Antonio Parks, who entered the portal a few weeks ago, announced this week he’ll play for UTSA.
- Will Plummer, a 2020 QB, committed to UA over the weekend. Plummer attends Gilbert High School. He is ranked as the No. 22 player in the state.
- Rob Gronkowski won his third Super Bowl.
Men’s Basketball
- Arizona (14-8, 5-4 Pac-12) is riding a three-game losing streaking after dropping one to ASU 95-88 in overtime. It’s the first win for ASU coach Bobby Hurley against the ‘Cats.
- Winning the Pac-12 Tournament is probably the only way UA plays in the Big Dance at this point.
- But next year is the year, and Nico Mannion has fans salivating. The 2019 PG commit dropped 57 points and hit the game-winner on his senior night for Pinnacle High School.
- Deandre Ayton and Lauri Markkanen will be on the World Team for the Rising Stars Challenge on Feb. 15.
