Dejah Mulipola homers twice as Arizona run-rules Illinois State

If you’re wondering how many home runs the Arizona Wildcats will hit this season, the answer is a lot.

Continuing their early-season power surge, the Wildcats blasted four homers in Saturday’s win vs. Illinois State, cruising to a 9-1 five-inning run-rule victory in Tampa, Florida.

Arizona, the Pac-12’s leader in long balls last season, has belted 10 homers in its first four games. Junior catcher Dejah Mulipola homered twice and had a two-run double against Illinois State, finishing 3 for 3 with five RBIs.

Meanwhile, junior center fielder Alyssa Palomino-Cardoza homered for the third time and third baseman Malia Martinez launched her second round-tripper.

The Wildcats (3-1) had a season-high 13 hits against the Redbirds. UA second baseman Reyna Carranco accounted for three of them. Palomino-Cardoza and Martinez each had two.

Sophomore right-hander Hanah Bowen (1-0) had seven strikeouts and allowed three hits in her season debut.

Arizona has yet to make an error this season. The Wildcats began the USF Opening Weekend Invitational by beating No. 19 Michigan and USF before losing a one-run game to No. 5 Florida. (Check out our softball section for coverage of those games.)

Arizona wraps up the tournament Sunday at 9:15 a.m. MST against N.C. State. After that, it will return home where it will host New Mexico on Thursday in the first game at newly-renovated Hillenbrand Stadium.
