Arizona softball falls to No. 5 Florida for first loss of 2019

The seventh-ranked Arizona Wildcats blasted two more homers, but it wasn’t enough as No. 5 Florida held them off 3-2 on Saturday in Tampa.

UA ace Taylor McQuillin (1-1) surrendered a two-run homer to Danielle Romanello in the bottom of the first, then Jordan Roberts homered in the bottom of the second.

McQuillin found her groove from there, finishing with six strikeouts and giving up four hits.

UA catcher Dejah Mulipola and third baseman Malia Martinez went deep for the Wildcats to chip away at Florida’s lead, but the offense was missing otherwise.

UA was held to five hits and stranded runners in the second and third innings, and finished with five left on base.

Arizona has left 23 runners left on base in its first three games. The six through nine hitters had one hit and struck out three times vs. the Gators.

So far in the young season, Arizona has only scored one run that wasn’t via a homer, not all that different from its offense last season.

The Cats (2-1) will look to wake up their bats at 3:45 p.m. MST against Illinois State.

Arizona then concludes the USF Opening Weekend Invitational on Sunday at 9:45 a.m. MST against NC State.
