Analyzing Arizona QB commit Will Plummer

We take a look at Arizona’s first 2020 commit

The Arizona Wildcats have landed their first commitment of the 2020 recruiting class from in-state quarterback Will Plummer.

Analysis

Brandon Combs: I like this commit for a few reasons. First and foremost, Plummer is an in-state QB. Getting him on board is a great way for the Wildcats to start building their 2020 class, and Plummer is a great piece to build around. He is well-liked within the state and is already starting to recruit other in-state players to join him in Tucson.

Another reason I like this commitment: his overall game. Plummer has very impressive arm strength, able to sling the ball accurately down the field off his back foot. He has a surprising amount of touch on some of his deep passes as well. I also really like his ability to use his legs if he needs to, and he’s dangerous with them.

The last reason is his high upside, as he still needs some development. His junior season was his first as a starter for Gilbert and he did a solid job. I’d expect a jump in his development during his senior season as well. Good news is that he shouldn’t need to be thrust into action when he gets to Tucson. Now, he could be more ready once he gets to campus, but again, that’ll all depend on how much he takes a step up in his development this upcoming season.

Gabe Encinas: I think this is the perfect type of commitment you want from a quarterback in the 2020 class.

The staff is attacking in-state grounds and picking up some much needed momentum in a loaded Phoenix/Tucson based class.

You didn’t need to land another top-300, 4-star guy with Grant Gunnell one year ahead and Kevin Doyle Jr. two. A high-end guy ensures that someone is going to transfer and leaves you exposed to depth issues.

But with Plummer I think you get a guy who is nowhere close to playing his best football, brings a high IQ into the quarterback room, intensifies the competition and brings quality depth as he continues to grow.

In his first year as a starter he showed a lot of good things on a Gilbert team that doesn’t have Power Five talent around him. He’s picked up two Pac-12 offers (Colorado and Oregon State) and had offers to three high-powered aerial attack offenses in Duke, North Texas and Oklahoma State. He’s got a great arm and some good mobility that makes him a dangerous prospect.

Crafty is the best word I can use to describe him. It doesn’t matter what the situation is, he’s going to get the ball off and deliver it where it needs be. It looks a bit reckless but it works.
