Scooby Wright signs with Arizona Hotshots of new spring football league

One of the best defensive players in Arizona Wildcats history is giving it another go in professional football, this time in the upcoming Alliance of American Football that begins play next year.

Wright, a linebacker who won three national player of the year awards in 2014, has signed with the Arizona Hotshots according to Shane Dale of ABC15 in Phoenix.

A seventh-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2016, Wright never played for the Browns but did appear in 13 games in 2016-17 with the Arizona Cardinals. He was waived by the Cardinals prior to the 2018 opener.

It was four years ago that Wright, 24, put forth one of the greatest seasons in college football history for a defensive player, leading the nation in tackles (163), tackles for loss (29) and forced fumbles (six) en route to winning the Bednarik, Lombardi and Nagurski awards.

Injuries prevented him from replicating that performance in 2015, his junior year, and it no doubt impacted his draft stock as he didn’t go until late in the final round.

The Hotshots begin play in February and will have their home games at Sun Devil Stadium.
