What do the Wildcats have in this 3-star offensive tackle?

The Arizona Wildcats have landed yet another offensive lineman for the 2019 recruiting class, junior college offensive tackle Josh Donovan.

Analysis

Brandon Combs: I like this pickup a lot. Donovan is a grown man. He is the kind of player that Arizona needs along the line to help immediately, and is someone I can see doing just that.

First thing that stands out to me is his size. He is quite large, 6-foot-5 and around 330 pounds. That’s someone that is hard to get around if you are on the edge. And it’s not like speed will help you.

Donovan has great footwork and moves quick laterally. Not only that, he also knows how to use his hands. He engages his man and doesn’t quit. He is relentless, using his long arms and strong hands to keep his man away from from the ball carrier/quarterback.

One thing that he’ll need to work on is not holding his man as he is trying to disengage. He brings such a nasty streak to the field and is so aggressive, that sometimes he can stay in the heat of the moment.

But with all that said, I love his aggression. It is exactly what you are looking for in an offensive lineman. Coach Joe Gilbert is going to have a heck of a group of newcomers with Donovan, Jamari Williams and Jordan Morgan coming in.

Gabe Encinas: I really like this commitment. I think Josh Donovan starts opposite of Donovan Laie next season at tackle.

At 6-foot-5, 330 pounds, the dude looks absolutely massive and he moves pretty well too. He is an absolute boss and I’m excited to see what he can do. I’m absolutely stunned at his offer list. As of now he is currently my sixth-highest ranked commit for Arizona.

I think he’s a better pass- than run blocker and he’s keeping a clean pocket and force guys to go outside. I’m curious to see how he does when someone is attacking him inside. When a guy is trying to beat him around the edge he is usually able to keep them out of the play.

As a run blocker he’ll move downfield but as mentioned above by Brandon he has a tendency to hold and there are even two plays in his highlights where he a flag gets thrown in his direction after some grabbing.

Joe Gilbert was coach of the year for Arizona in 2018 and after piecing together an offensive line that had no business being good last season, getting a grown man in there is something to get excited about.
