What will the defensive tackle bring to the Wildcats?

The Arizona Wildcats have landed another defensive lineman for the 2019 recruiting class, JUCO standout Trevon Mason.

Analysis

Brandon Combs: Mason is a mountain of a human being, sitting at 6-foot-6 and near 300 pounds. He is quick for his size and it kind of looks like he is moving in slow motion (due to his size). He still is quick on his feet, and is just a powerful human being. He can use his strength to shed blocks, but he’s also able to use his long arms as well to shed the block and snag the ball carrier.

What he brings to Tucson is size that you dream of along the defensive line and that can’t be overlooked. He will need to work on his quickness coming off the ball but he has a solid set of skills already in place. I can say, with players like P.J. Johnson (assuming he comes back), Myles Tapusoa, and Mason, the defensive line will look a lot different in the future. And it will be for the better.

Gabe Encinas: His size is obviously the first thing you notice. At 6-foot-6, he has a very lean 300 pounds as well. You can never have enough size on the defensive line and he comes from the junior college ranks which gave him some time to polish his game.

Based on film I don’t think he does anything that blows you away, but I think that he is a very sound and experienced player. He is extremely quick and moves like a defensive end. I like how he keeps his eyes on the backfield to see where the play is going. And with his size he also has the power to do some damage in the trenches.

Mason can realistically play any position on the line. We don’t know the status of PJ Johnson, but whether or not he stays, I see Mason playing a big part of the defense next season.
