How Arizona’s commits performed in Week 6

Taking a look at how future Wildcats performed this past weekend

After a majority of the commits were on bye weeks last weekend, the future of the Arizona Wildcat football program stepped back onto the gridiron to continue their seasons.

There was plenty of action this past weekend, to include Grant Gunnell taking more steps toward history.

Let’s get into it and see how each commit performed in their respective games.

Grant Gunnell, QB, St. Pius X

Result/Score: Away loss to Prestonwood Christian, 57-48

School Record: 4-1 (0-0)

Game Stats: 42-for-57, 530 yds, 6 TD, 1 INT; 17 car, 52 yds, 0 TD

Season Stats: 142-for-207, 2212 yds, 25 TD, 2 INT; 36 car, 269 yds, 5 TD

Game Notes: This was another really tough game for Gunnell and SPX. Gunnell did another great job at leading a comeback, however this time, it fell just short. During the game he showed escape artist-like mobility in the pocket, dancing around would-be tacklers and completing passes or running for decent gains. The QB commit moved up to third in career passing yards and second in career passing touchdowns in Texas high school football history after the performance. Pretty good.

Next Game: vs Bishop Dunne, Oct 5th

Kwabena Watson, DE/OLB, Edison

Result/Score: Neutral victory over Madera South, 48-8

School Record: 3-3 (1-0)

Game Stats: 2 tackles, 2.0 TFL, 1.O sack (Unconfirmed, based off clips)

Season Stats: Unknown tackles, 17.0 TFL, 10.0 sacks (confirmed)

Game Notes: Watson showed what made Arizona fans fall in love with him this past weekend. He was aggressive and disruptive. He showed great patience, vision, and explosion in reaction to plays. He absolutely wrecked the quarterback on a play and blew up another run play. Watson is having another productive year for the Tigers and will only help Arizona’s pass rush once he arrives in Tucson.

Next Game: @ Madera, Oct 5th

Maurice Gaines Jr., CB, St. Thomas More

Result/Score: N/A

School Record: 1-1 (0-0)

Game Stats: N/A

Season Stats: 3 tackles (Unconfirmed, based off clips)

Game Notes: No score was posted for STM’s game against St. Joseph’s.

Next Game: vs Life Christian Academy, Oct 6th

Jalen Johnson, WR, Eleanor Roosevelt

Result/Score: Home victory against Corona, 57-0

School Record: 4-2 (1-0)

Game Stats: Unknown

Season Stats: 16 rec, 347 yds, 3 TD

Game Notes: The Mustangs destroyed Corona this past weekend and Johnson played a decent role in that victory. He had at least four catches and a touchdown in the blowout. He did have a couple of high-thrown balls that were difficult catches for anyone thrown his way.

Next Game: @ King, Oct 5th

Kane Bradford, DT, Skyline

Result/Score: Away victory against Lake Highlands, 55-44

School Record: 2-1 (1-0)

Game Stats: 2 tackles, 1.5 TFL (Unconfirmed, based off clips)

Season Stats: 8 tackles, 4.5 TFL, 1.0 sack (Unconfirmed, based off clips)

Game Notes: Bradford and Skyline won their first conference game this season on Friday as they took down Lake Highlands. There weren’t very many clips of Bradford, but the clips that are out there highlight his continued growth and athleticism. In one, he’s able to shed a block and explode to the scrambling QB for a TFL. On the last one he sheds a block nicely and cracks the ball carrier in the backfield for another TFL.

Next Game: vs Duncanville, Oct 5th

Chris Roland, DB, William Knight

Result/Score: Away victory against Littlerock, 42-0

School Record: 5-1 (3-0)

Game Stats: 3 tackles and 1 PBU; 5 rec, 142 yds, 2 TD

Season Stats: 28 tackles, 2.0 TFL, 4 INT, 2 PBU, 1 forced fumble; 29 rec, 479 yds, 5 TD

Game Notes: Roland continues to put together another really solid year offensively for the Hawks. He also continues his production on defense, continuing to show his effectiveness in the run game. He also had a really nice punt return in the 42-0 shellacking of the Lobos.

Next game: vs Eastside, Oct 5th

Derrion Clark, LB, South Oak Cliff

Result/Score: N/A

School Record: 3-1 (1-0)

Game Stats: N/A

Season Stats: 21 tackles and 3.0 TFL (Incomplete, not all games have been updated)

Game Notes: Clark and SOC had a bye week.

Next Game: vs Adamson, Oct 5th

Michael Wiley, RB, Strake Jesuit

Result/Score: Home victory against Dawson, 55-32

School Record: 4-0 (1-0)

Game Stats: 12 car, 95 yds, 2 TD; 4 rec, 51 yds, 0 TD

Season Stats: 70 car, 498 yds, 6 TD; 7 rec, 88 yds, 0 TD

Game Notes: Wiley and Strake Jesuit took on current freshman running back Bam Bam Smith’s former team in Dawson this past weekend. I wasn’t able to find any clips of Wiley in action but he did have a productive game with 95 yards on the ground and two scores. He also had 51 receiving yards to go along with that production.

Next Game: @ Alief Elsik, Oct 4th

Jordan Morgan, OT, Marana

Result/Score: Home loss to Buena, 41-28

School Record: 4-2 (0-1)

Game Stats: N/A

Season Stats: N/A

Game Notes: Marana has hit a little snag in its season, falling to Buena for their second consecutive loss. Morgan and the o-line had allowed for the Tigers to run for just under 150 yards, a touchdown, and an average of 6.1 yards per carry. Unfortunately, they also gave up 4 sacks.

Next Game: @ Ironwood Ridge, Oct 5th

Eddie Siaumau, OLB/DE, Leone

Result/Score: N/A

School Record: N/A

Game Stats: N/A

Season Stats: N/A

Game Notes: I have been unable to obtain any information on Siaumau’s season thus far.

Next Game: N/A

Kyle Ostendorp, P, Desert Vista

Result/Score: Home victory against Desert Ridge, 27-3

School Record: 5-1 (1-1)

Game Stats: Unknown

Season Stats: 8 punts, 361 yds, 45.1 avg, 56 yd long, 4 Inside the 20 (Note: stats only include 4 of 6 games)

Game Notes: Desert Vista got back on track with a nice win over Desert Ridge. There were no updated stats for Ostendorp.

Next Game: @ Mountain Pointe, Oct 5th
