Arizona volleyball: Dave Rubio on concussions, Colorado/Utah, and an Aaron Rodgers comparison

Dave Rubio has never seen anything like it in his 25 years at Arizona.

Five Wildcats have suffered concussions this season, a streak of luck the longtime coach could only liken to winning the lottery.

“It’s so random that we’ve had so many in such a short period of time. I feel like I should buy a lottery ticket. Isn’t the Mega Powerball like almost a billion dollars?” he joked. “And the numbers I pick are everyone’s number on their uniform that’s gotten nailed.”

Three of the team’s most important players — outside hitters Kendra Dahlke and Paige Whipple and middle blocker Elizabeth Shelton — have missed matches due to concussions recently and the losses have piled up as a result. Arizona (14-6, 3-5 Pac-12) has lost four straight heading into this weekend’s homestand against Colorado and Utah.

However, Rubio thinks all the injuries can benefit the team in the long run.

“Eventually we’ll get healthy in the second half of the season when we’re really going to be good and we get everybody back and our system starts to really click and now we’re better because the players who normally play had to play, and now we have more experience and more depth,” he said.

Here’s more from Rubio on that, why he compares setter Julia Patterson to Aaron Rodgers, and more:
