Arizona Marvelous Ideas: Wildcat Wrap: Arizona hosts Red-Blue game; volleyball and soccer have tough weekends

Monday is here again, and we have everything you may have missed in Arizona Athletics last week.

After a tremendous start to the season, Arizona has run into some bumps in the road lately. After being swept by the Washington schools last weekend, UA (14-5, 3-4 Pac-12) started its road trip in Southern California with a 3-0 loss to 20th ranked UCLA on Friday, making for three-straight losses.
Sunday, UA won its first set in a week, but it wasn’t enough as the ‘Cats lost their fourth-straight match, a 3-1 loss to USC. Senior Kendra Dahlke, who leads the Pac-12 in kills, did not play because of a concussion she suffered against UCLA.
The Wildcats are now eighth in the conference. They host Colorado on Friday and Utah on Sunday.

Arizona only had one game this week, and they tied Cal, 3-3 on Saturday on a rain-soaked field. On one hand, Arizona rallied back from a 3-1 deficit to earn a point. On the other hand, the Wildcats outshot the Bears 31-7 and did not win. Plus, Cal is just 1-4-1 in the Pac-12, so it was not a good result for Arizona.
UA is 8-4-2 overall and 1-3-2 in the Pac-12 as they get set to host the Washington schools this weekend. Can you believe the final homestand of the season is already here?

The women and men beat Grand Canyon University in the season-opener on Saturday. UA women won 204-80, the men 172-125.
Junior Hannah Cox won three races, while freshman Monica Gumina had two victories to commence her UA career. Sophomore Brooks Fail, junior Noah Reid, senior Mackenzie Rumrill, junior Mallory Korenwinder, and sophomore Delaney Schnell won two individual events.
Senior Matt Salerno won the 100-meter breaststroke for the men with a time of 57.60. Sophomore Sam Iida placed second with 57.94 and freshman Ty Wells finished third with 1:00.38.
The women’s team heads to Oregon State on Oct. 27. The men’s team won’t have another meet until next month when they head to USC on Nov. 3.

The women’s basketball team was picked to finish 10th in the Pac-12. UA finished 11th last season with a 2-16 conference record. However, Adia Barnes brought in unprecedented talent, like Cate Reese, into the program and is poised to turn heads sooner rather than later. Reese is the first McDonald’s All-American to sign with the women’s program.

UA got the sweep in the Mile High State with wins over CU and Colorado State.
The 17th ranked ‘Cats sit atop the Western Collegiate Hockey League. They head to Oklahoma to play Oklahoma Central on Thursday.

Arizona was picked to finish fourth in the Pac-12 by the media.

UA basketball great Richard Jefferson announced his retirement from the NBA. Jefferson played 17 seasons in the league with several teams including the Nets, Cleveland Cavaliers and Denver Nuggets. Jefferson won a championship with the Cavaliers in 2016. Last month, Jefferson’s father was killed in a drive-by shooting in Compton, California.
Joseph Blair was named head coach of the NBA G-League’s Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Wednesday. Blair played for UA from 1992-96.

Kadeem Allen (Knicks) and Kobi Simmons (Cavaliers) were cut by their respective teams.

An abysmal 42-10 loss to Utah on Friday night leaves the ‘Cats (3-4, 2-2 Pac-12) in a state of “where do we go now?” The questions about Kevin Sumlin, the status of quarterback Khalil Tate and the defense keep piling up as more fans abort the S.S. Sumlin.
