How Arizona’s commits performed in Week 8

Let’s take a look at how the future Wildcats did last weekend

Grant Gunnell, QB, St. Pius X

Result: Road win against Central Catholic, 51-26

School Record: 6-1

Game Stats: 20-for-26, 311 yds, 5 TD, 0 INT; 14 car, 135 yds, 2 TD

Season Stats: 184-for-227, 2734 yds, 32 TD, 2 INT; 64 car, 412 yds, 7 TD

Game Notes: Gunnell continued to do Grant Gunnell things last Friday. He also showed that he is able to create big plays with his legs. His athletecism is definitely something that’s grossly underrated. I’m not sure I need to go into further detail. Instead, watch his highlights below.

Oh, and one more thing. He now only needs 318 yards and 10 TDs to break the Texas career highschool football records for both categories.

Next Game: vs Concordia Lutheran, Oct. 19

Kwabena Watson, DE/OLB, Edison

Result: Home loss to San Joaquin Memorial, 41-14

School Record: 4-4

Game Stats: 3 tackles and 1.5 TFL (Unconfirmed, based on clips)

Season Stats: Unknown tackles, 17.0 TFL, 10.0 sacks (confirmed through interview)

Game Notes: Watson is going to be a problem for Pac-12 offensive linemen. He is just naturally disruptive and has a heck of a motor. He is powerful and explosive, but it is his technique and moves that make him so dangerous. Once he is past an offensive lineman, he explodes to the ball carrier and rarely misses a tackle. These skills were on full display Friday as seen below.

Next Game: neutral against Sanger, Oct. 19

Maurice Gaines Jr., CB, St. Thomas More

Result: Neutral victory against Worcester Academy, 29-14

School Record: 3-1

Game Stats: Unknown

Season Stats: 3 tackles, 1 INT, 1 PBU (Unconfirmed, based off clips)

Game Notes: Gaines had himself a pretty solid game based off his game film. He showed he can play physical and is a solid cover corner. He didn’t record any stats based on his film, but it is still impressive watching him stick with receivers downfield.

Next Game: neutral against St. Frances Academy, Oct. 19

Jalen Johnson, WR, Eleanor Roosevelt

Result: Home loss to Santiago, 21-20

School Record: 5-3

Game Stats: 7 rec, 105 yds, 0 TD

Season Stats: 28 rec, 527 yds, 4 TD

Game Notes: There isn’t any film of Johnson during the game but he had a solid performance. The game was delayed Friday night due to weather and resumed on Saturday afternoon. It was a hard-fought game but the Mustangs couldn’t pull out the win.

Next Game: vs Norco, Oct. 19

Kane Bradford, DT, Skyline

Result: Home victory against White, 43-6

School Record: 3-2

Game Stats: Unknown

Season Stats: 9 tackles, 5.5 TFL, 1.0 sack (Unconfirmed, based off clips)

Game Notes: I have been unable to find any stats or clips of Bradford.

Next Game: at Richardson, Oct. 19

Chris Roland, DB, William Knight

Result: Home victory against Antelope Valley, 42-33

School Record: 7-1

Game Stats: 1 tackle; 5 rec, 144 yds, 1 TD

Season Stats: 33 tackles, 2.0 TFL, 5 INT, 2 PBU, 1 forced fumble; 48 rec, 851 yds, 10 TD

Game Notes: Roland didn’t have that many stats on the defensive side. He did a great job playing physically and shutting out his receiver.

However, he had a really solid game on the offensive side. He showed off his athleticism and awareness on quite a few sideline catches. He also showed off his speed and quickness on his touchdown catch and run.

Next game: at Highland, Oct. 19

Derrion Clark, LB, South Oak Cliff

Result: Road victory against Conrad, 58-0

School Record: 5-1

Game Stats: 9 tackles, 3.0 TFL, 1.0 sack

Season Stats: 40 tackles, 10.0 TFL, 1.0 sack (Incomplete, not all games have been updated)

Game Notes: There were no clips of Clark but based on stats and the score, it appears that he and SOC had no problems.

Next Game: vs Spruce, Oct. 18

Michael Wiley, RB, Strake Jesuit

Result: Road victory against Alief Hastings, 29-17

School Record: 6-0

Game Stats: 13 car, 78 yds, 1 TD; 2 rec, 8 yds, 0 TD

Season Stats: 100 car, 734 yds, 9 TD; 11 rec, 158 yds, 0 TD

Game Notes: Wiley continues to have productive games as he finishes up his senior season. His stats weren’t necessarily eye-popping in SJ’s 29-17 victory, but he did have a nice 24-yard TD run.

Next Game: vs Pearland, Oct. 19

Jordan Morgan, OT, Marana

Result: Road loss to Cienega, 44-28

School Record: 5-3

Game Stats: N/A

Season Stats: N/A

Game Notes: Marana was handed its third loss of the season to Cienega. Morgan and the O-line probably had their worst performance of the season. They allowed two sacks and five other tackles for loss to the Bobcats.

Next Game: vs Sunnyside, Oct. 19

Eddie Siaumau, OLB/DE, Leone

Result: Road victory against Faga’itua, 12-8

School Record: 2-3

Game Stats: N/A

Season Stats: N/A

Game Notes: I was able to find the results for Siaumau and his Leone team. They have won two straight after starting the season 0-3.

Next Game: N/A

Kyle Ostendorp, P, Desert Vista

Result: Home victory against Boulder Creek, 66-23

School Record: 7-1

Game Stats: Unknown

Season Stats: 15 punts, 622 yds, 41.5 avg, 56 yd long, 7 Inside the 20 (Note: stats only include 6 of 7 games)

Game Notes: Desert Vista continued its dominating performance this season as the Thunder defeated Boulder Creek easily. There were no stats for Ostendorp for this game.

Next Game: at Corona del Sol, Oct. 19
