Wildcat Wrap: Football loses to BYU, but soccer and volleyball keep winning

Let’s recap the week that was for the Arizona Wildcats

Football is back, but the #NewEra didn’t have the lavish beginning many hoped as the Arizona Wildcats lost to BYU to open the 2018 season.

Still, despite the outcome on Saturday and the subsequent hot takes from fans on Twitter, there were still many reasons for UA fans to cheer last week.

Let’s wade through it in our latest edition of the Wildcat Wrap. (If there is anything we missed, please add it in the comment section below!)

Volleyball

• The Wildcats improved to 6-0 after sweeping the Cactus Classic over the weekend. UA beat Lipscomb, San Diego State and Pacific 3-0 in each match.
• Against Lipscomb, senior outside hitter Kendra Dahlke became the 18th player in program history to record 1,000 career kills. She is the Pac-12 leader in kills.
• Up next for the ‘Cats is a road trip to Las Cruces, New Mexico where they will face Montana on Friday in the Borderland Invitational. UA will also face UTEP and host New Mexico State over the weekend, too.

Soccer

• Arizona soccer won both games in the Sun Devil Desert Classic. They routed Southeast Missouri State 5-0 on Friday before beating New Hampshire 2-0 on Sunday. Arizona is now 4-1 and has won four straight since a puzzling loss to Albany. They have a big homestand coming up against Boise State and Baylor. Boise State won 13 games last season, while Baylor reached the Elite Eight.
• Senior goalkeeper Lainey Burdett recorded her 21st career shutout against New Hampshire, making her the program’s new all-time shutouts leader.
• Sophomore Jada Talley scored a goal in both games, upping her total to four on the season, which leads the team. Freshman Emily Knous scored in both games, too.
• Freshman Brooke Wilson scored her second goal of the season Friday. She is believed to be the highest-ranked recruit Arizona has ever landed, so we sat down with her to find out why she chose the UA and what her goals are in Tucson.
• The only bad news regarding soccer this week is that head coach Tony Amato actually isn’t the new all-time wins leader — at least not yet. He is currently tied at 58 with Dan Tobias. Tobias was originally listed at 55 wins — which Amato surpassed two weekends ago — but three wins were wrongfully credited to interim coaches in 2009 instead of Tobias, who resigned in the middle of that season.

Baseball

• Junior infielders Nick Quintana and Cameron Cannon were recognized by D1Baseball for their performances in the Cape Cod League this summer. Quintana was ranked the 12th-best draft eligible player in the league, while Cannon ranked 29th. Quintana finished the season with a .259 average, 28 hits and 23 RBIs. Cannon finished with a .263 average, 42 hits and 28 RBIs.
• Sophomore teammate Donta’ Williams was listed as the No. 22 pro prospect in the Northwoods League. He is listed as the 11th prospect in the 2020 draft. Williams played for the La Crosse Loggers over the summer where he had a .252 average, 38 hits and 18 RBIs.
• Former 3B/P Bobby Dalbec and P Kevin Ginkel were selected to play in the Arizona Fall League. Dalbec will represent the Boston Red Sox on the Mesa Solar Sox, while Ginkel will suit up for the Salt River Rafters and represent the Diamondbacks. Both players are with Double-A clubs, with Dalbec on the Portland Sea Dogs and Ginkel with the Jackson Generals.
• Arizona had glove (and bat) day

Swimming & diving

• Former University of Texas coach Dwight Dumais was named as the new UA diving coach on Tuesday. Dumais replaces John Appleman, who was hired in June but parted ways with the UA in July after being suspended by USA Diving for unspecified reasons. Dumais was a five-time All-American diver at Stanford.

Softball

• Arizona released its 2019 roster. All-American first baseman Alyssa Palomino is listed as an outfielder but don’t read too much into that. She was listed as an outfielder last year, too.
• The softball team is practicing at Hillenbrand Stadium during construction — or at least what remains of it:

Football

• Arizona lost 28-23 to BYU in its season-opener. Hit our football section to see all the game coverage from that.
• Here is how the rest of the Pac-12 fared in Week 1.
• Arizona will be at Houston this week. The Cougars handled Rice in their opener.
• The Wildcats open as four-point underdogs against Houston.
• Former Arizona quarterback Brandon Dawkins left Indiana, citing his mental health.
• In his first press conference of the year on Monday, Coach Kevin Sumlin announced Texas A&M transfer linebacker Santino Marchiol is no longer on the team. Just over 24 hours later, a tweet by Chad Monson, the offensive and running backs coach at Glendale Community College stated Marchiol had signed to play for the school. The tweet was later deleted.
• Arizona wide receiver commit Jalen Johnson had seven catches for 212 yards and three TDs in his game a few weeks ago. Highly-touted QB commit Grant Gunnell threw for 397 yards, rushed for 46 yards and had seven total TDs in his Friday night lights action. (You can see how all of UA’s commits are doing here.)
• Former ‘Cats linebacker Scooby Wright III was released by the Arizona Cardinals. Wright had been with the Cardinals since 2016 and played in 13 games with them.
• Nick Foles will reportedly start Week 1 for the Eagles

Basketball

• Kobi Simmons was released by the Memphis Grizzlies. Simmons, who turned pro in 2017 after one year with Arizona, was on a two-way contract with the Grizzlies. He played in 32 games last season, starting 12 and averaging 6.1 points per contest.
• Arizona added walk-on Alec Spence. The 6-foot-6 guard hails from St. Louis, Missouri, where he averaged 19.2 points, 9.8 rebounds and 4.6 per game in his high school career.
• Five-star forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl will take his official visit to UA from Oct. 13-15, which is the weekend of the Red-Blue game. Five-star point guard Nico Mannion is set to take his official visit that weekend, too. Robinson-Earl took an unofficial visit to UA last season.
• Arizona swapped Texas Southern for Georgia Southern on its non-conference schedule.
