How Arizona commits performed in Week 2

Let’s take a look at how the future Wildcats performed for their respective schools

Now that football season is back we will continue our series every week of looking at how the future of the Arizona Wildcats football program played in their respective games.

Last week, only a few commits played. This week, however, is a different story.

Let’s dive into the Week 2 review!

Grant Gunnell, QB, St. Pius X

Result/Score: Away victory over Beaumont United 55-21

School Record: 1-0 (0-0)

Game Stats: 33-for-40, 414 yds, 5 TD, 0 INT; 8 car, 46 yds, 2 TD

Season Stats: 33-for-40, 414 yds, 5 TD, 0 INT; 8 car, 46 yds, 2 TD

Notes: Gunnell had himself a night. He accounted for all but one, ONE, of the Panthers’ touchdowns in their win over Beaumont United. From the clip I saw, he looks like he hasn’t lost a beat since his junior year. It was a beautiful pass in between two defenders for a long completion. There is no way, in my opinion, that Gunnell keeps his criminal 3-star rating with the recruiting services by the time the season ends. He is going to have a great year. His overall game highlights are below.

Next Game: vs La Marque, Sep 7th

Kwabena Watson, OLB, Edison

Result/Score: Away loss to Buchanan 45-6

School Record: 1-2 (0-0)

Game Stats: Unknown

Season Stats: Unknown (Stats have not been updated)

Notes: I haven’t been able to find any stats for Watson but here is a 20-second clip of him blowing up an offensive lineman and pushing him into the QB.

Next Game: at Clovis North, Sep 6th

Maurice Gaines, CB, St. Thomas More

Result/Score: N/A

School Record: N/A

Game Stats: N/A

Season Stats: N/A

Notes: Gaines and his team haven’t played a game yet. Of note, he has scheduled an official visit to Illinois on Nov. 24.

Next Game: vs Nordrhein-Westfalen, Sep 8th

Jalen Johnson, WR, Eleanor Roosevelt

Result/Score: Away loss to Tesoro 35-6

School Record: 2-1 (0-0)

Game Stats: Unknown

Season Stats: 8 rec, 227 yds, 3 TD (NOTE: This does not include stats from Friday’s game.)

Notes: Johnson has really started to break out this season after limited action last year due to injury. Last week, he had 212 yards on 7 catches and 3 touchdowns. This week seemed a little more quiet but he is still a major target for the Mustangs. I could confirm he had at least 2 receptions, and based on the clips below, he continued his playmaking streak for Roosevelt.

Next Game: Neutral site against Servite, Sep 7th

Kane Bradford, DT, Skyline

Result/Score: Home loss to South Oak Cliff 10-7

School Record: 1-0 (0-0)

Game Stats: 1 tackle, 1.0 TFL (Based on clip)

Season Stats: 1 tackle, 1.0 TFL (Based on clip)

Notes: Bradford his powerful Skyline team took on fellow Arizona commit Derrion Clark and South Oak Cliff. Based on the one clip, Bradford did a great job of overpowering his opponent and getting in on the TFL.

Next Game: vs Ennis, Sep 7th

Chris Roland, CB, William Knight

Result/Score: Away victory against Burroughs 28-6

School Record: 1-1 (0-0)

Game Stats: 4 tackles, 1.0 TFL, 2 INT; Punt return for TD (Based off game clips)

Season Stats: 6 tackles, 1.0 TFL, 2 INT; Punt return for TD (Based off game clips)

Notes: Roland looked even better than last week in the Hawks’ 28-6 handling of Burroughs. He showed off his press coverage and zone skills, his tackling, his ability to play the run effectively, and his overall athleticism as he returned a punt for a long touchdown. One thing I’ve noticed about him is that he loves contact and loves to hit people. He is patient, let’s the play work out, then reacts quickly.

Next Game: vs Paloma Valley, Sep 7th

Derrion Clark, ILB, South Oak Cliff

Result/Score: Away victory against Skyline 10-7

School Record: 1-0 (0-0)

Game Stats: 15 tackles, 3.0 TFL

Season Stats: 15 tackles, 3.0 TFL

Notes: Clark and SOC defeated fellow Arizona commit Kane Bradford and Skyline in a close game. That was no easy task as Skyline is one of the best teams in the Dallas area. Clark continued his impressive production last year on Friday as he racked up 15 tackles, 3 of those for a loss. In the clips below they show 3 plays from 3 different angles. Clark is the middle backer wearing No. 7. He shows great vision and excellent patience.

Next Game: vs Duncanville, Sep 7th

Michael Wiley, RB, Strake Jesuit

Result/Score: Neutral site victory against St. Thomas Catholic 56-32

School Record: 1-0 (0-0)

Game Stats: 15 car, 192 yds, 2 TD

Season Stats: 15 car, 192 yds, 2 TD

Notes: Wiley had himself a game to start out the 2018 season. He grabbed the majority of Strake Jesuit’s 245 rushing yards in the first half. During the game he averaged 12.8 yards per carry which, if you didn’t know, is a pretty good clip. He busted a very nice 95-yard touchdown run by following his blockers, turning on the jets, and outrunning everyone along the sideline. I expect Wiley to continue to produce at that type of level this season.

Next Game: vs West Brook, Sept. 7

Jordan Morgan, OT, Marana

Result/Score: Home victory against Catalina Foothills 35-20

School Record: 3-0 (0-0)

Game Stats: N/A

Season Stats: N/A

Notes: Not sure how Morgan performed during the win but the o-line only gave up 2 TFLs against CatFoot.

Next Game: at Desert View, Sept. 7

Eddie Siaumau, OLB, Leone

Result/Score: N/A

School Record: N/A

Game Stats: N/A

Season Stats: N/A

Notes: Leone has yet to play a game yet

Next Game: against Fagaitua, Sept. 8

Kyle Ostendorp, P, Desert Vista

Result/Score: N/A

School Record: 2-0 (0-0)

Game Stats: N/A

Season Stats: 5 punts, 229 yds, 45.8 AVG, 56 yd long, 2 Inside the 20

Notes: Desert Vista was on a bye week.

Next Game: vs. Valley Vista, Sept. 7
