How Arizona’s commits performed in Week 4
Time to check in on the future of the Arizona football program
The Arizona Wildcats got back on track last weekend, thumping Southern Utah 62-31 for their first win of the Kevin Sumlin era.
The ‘Cats still have some things to work on as they head into conference play but the offense has started to find its rhythm.
Speaking of rhythm, a few of Arizona’s commits have already established theirs and continued to dominate this past weekend. Let’s take a look at how each future Wildcat performed this past weekend.
Grant Gunnell, QB, St. Pius X
Result/Score: Away victory over Episcopal, 42-0
School Record: 3-0 (0-0)
Game Stats: 22-for-37, 444 yds, 2 TD, 0 INT; 3 car, 32 yds, 2 TD
Season Stats: 74-for-110, 1246 yds, 13 TD, 0 INT; 14 car, 125 yds, 4 TD
Game Notes: Gunnell continues to show great vision, anticipation, touch, and arm strength. His current recruiting ranking is criminal because of a couple subpar performances in camps, not games. I personally don’t care whether he is a 3- or 4-star, he is a straight baller. He also had a nice 22-yard touchdown run on Friday. To top it off, he made his way to Tucson for a visit after his dominating performance and watched his future team get things together offensively.
Next Game: vs Manor, Sep 21st
Kwabena Watson, OLB/DE, Edison
Result/Score: Away loss to Dinuba, 30-7
School Record: 2-3 (0-0)
Game Stats: Unknown
Season Stats: 3 tackles (Unconfirmed, based off clips)
Game Notes: I have been unable to find anything on Watson’s performance Friday. Edison did not have a good game however, losing 30-7 to Dinuba.
Next Game: Neutral against Madera South
Maurice Gaines Jr., CB, St. Thomas More
Result/Score: Away loss against Choate Rosemary Hall, 31-6
School Record: 1-1 (0-0)
Game Stats: 2 tackles (Unconfirmed, based off clips)
Season Stats: 3 tackles (Unconfirmed, based off clips)
Game Notes: STM didn’t have a great game at all. Gaines made a couple of pretty good tackles and showed off his speed by keeping up with receivers down the field and catching one before he could score. He did get caught up in a misdirection fake, but he caught up to the receiver before he could score.
Next Game: vs St. Joseph’s, Sep 29th
Jalen Johnson, WR, Eleanor Roosevelt
Result/Score: Away victory against Rancho Mirage, 28-19
School Record: 3-2 (0-0)
Game Stats: None
Season Stats: 16 rec, 347 yds, 3 TD
Game Stats: Johnson was dinged up and didn’t record any stats in Roosevelt’s victory on Friday. From what I understand it isn’t too serious and should be back after the Mustangs’ bye week this coming weekend. Below are his midseason highlights.
Next Game: vs Corona, Sep 28th
Kane Bradford, DT, Skyline
Result/Score: Away victory against Sam Houston, 49-7
School Record: 1-1 (0-0)
Game Stats: 3 tackles, 1.5 TFL, 1.0 sack (Unconfirmed, based off clips)
Season Stats: 6 tackles, 3.0 TFL, 1.0 sack (Unconfirmed, based off clips)
Game Notes: Bradford is quickly becoming a dominating force at defensive tackle/nose tackle. He is powerful, has a high motor, and has improved technique. It even looks like he’s added a couple of moves to his repertoire. He caused havoc against Sam Houston and, at times, was easily able to get into the backfield. Below are his highlights from Sam Houston and updated highlights from the SOC game.
Sam Houston:
South Oak Cliff:
Next Game: at Lake Highlands, Sep 28th
Chris Roland, DB, William Knight
Score/Result: Away victory against Quartz Hill, 28-21
School Record: 3-1 (1-0)
Game Stats: 2 tackles; 6 rec, 188 yds, 3 TD
Season Stats: 22 tackles, 2.0 TFL, 2 INT, 1 PBU, 1 forced fumble; 23 rec, 389 yds, 5 TD
Game Notes: Defensively, Roland continues to play physically and continues to show how much he likes to hit people. Offensively, he is a dangerous receiver. He runs pretty good routes and his ability to run away from defenders makes him an ideal deep threat.
Next Game: vs Lancaster, Sep 21st
Derrion Clark, LB, South Oak Cliff
Result/Score: Home victory against Wilmer-Hutchins, 56-12
School Record: 2-1 (0-0)
Game Stats: 6 tackles
Season Stats: 21 tackles, 3.0 TFL (Missing stats from one game)
Game Notes: There isn’t much film to go off of to see how Clark performed. However, the one play below shows how hard he plays and his pursuit of the ball-carrier.
Next Game: at Red Oak, Sep 21st
Michael Wiley, RB, Strake Jesuit
Result/Score: Home victory against Eisenhower, 34-3
School Record: 3-0 (0-0)
Game Stats: 16 car, 73 yds, 2 TD; 1 rec, 18 yds, 0 TD
Season Stats: 58 car, 403 yds, 4 TD; 3 rec, 37 yds, 0 TD
Game Stats: I haven’t found any clips of Wiley during the game but Strake Jesuit, overall, didn’t put up big rushing numbers. Wiley did have the most on the team and he managed to also run for two scores as well. He also had an 18-yard reception.
Next Game: vs Dawson, Sep 28th
Jordan Morgan, OT, Marana
Result/Score: Home loss to Williams Field, 33-14
School Record: 4-1 (0-0)
Game Stats: N/A
Season Stats: N/A
Game Notes: It was not a strong perfomance by the Tiger offensive line overall. However, Morgan looked good once again. He showed great lateral movement and did a fantastic job in pass pro and run blocking. Below are some clips that one of our writers, Christopher Boan, recorded while at the game. On the recruiting front, Morgan received an offer from USC. However, he is still solid to Arizona.
Touchdown Marana. Bourguet hits TJ Cephers for a 7-yard passing TD. Marana is back within five, 12-7, with 10:51 left in the second. #AZHSFB pic.twitter.com/sBOXgzJM0p

Ugly injury for Marana back Xo Ratliffe. Hopefully he’s okay. #AZHSFB pic.twitter.com/bv9idP1QTI

Next Game: vs Buena, Sep 28th
Eddie Siaumau, OLB/DE, Leone
Result/Score: N/A
School Record: N/A
Game Stats: N/A
Season Stats: N/A
Game Notes: I have been unable to obtain any information on Siaumau’s season thus far.
Next Game: N/A
Kyle Ostendorp, P, Desert Vista
Result/Score: Away victory against North, 63-7
School Record: 4-0 (0-0)
Game Stats: Unknown
Season Stats: 5 punts, 229 yds, 45.8 AVG, 56 yd long, 2 Inside the 20
Game Notes: Desert Vsita keeps trucking along with their undefeated season. I haven’t been able to find any stats for Ostendorp over the past two games.
Next Game: at Highland, Sep 21st
