Arizona Wildcats in the NFL: Dane Cruikshank named AFC Special Teams Player of Week

Cruikshank pulls off trick play, Gronk a non-factor, and more

Week 2 of the NFL concluded with my Arizona Cardinals falling 34-0 to the Los Angeles Rams. It wasn’t a good feeling, but with Sunday comes multiple former Arizona Wildcats alumni in action as well so it’s not all bad!

Let’s look how the former Wildcats performed this past weekend.

Dane Cruikshank, DB, Tennessee Titans

Result/Score: Home victory against Houston, 20-17

Game Stats: 2 tackles; 1 rec, 66 yds, 1 TD

Season Stats: 3 tackles; 1 rec, 66 yds, 1 TD

Game Notes: Cruikshank made a couple of tackles against the Texans but that’s not where he made his biggest impact. On a fake punt, Cruikshank ended up catching and running a 66-yard pass for a touchdown. It was quite the sight to see and it was his first touchdown reception since 2013. He was also named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week.

Next Game: at Jacksonville Jaguars, Sep 23rd

Marquis Flowers, LB, Detroit Lions

Result/Score: Away loss to San Francisco, 30-27

Game Stats: None

Season Stats: 1 tackle

Game Notes: Flowers played against the 49ers but did not record any stats.

Next Game: vs. New England Patriots, Sept. 23

Nick Foles, QB, Philadelphia Eagles

Result/Score: Away loss to Tampa Bay, 27-21

Game Stats: 35-for-48, 334 yds, 1 TD, 0 INT; 3 car, 8 yds, 0 TD

Season Stats: 54-for-82, 451 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT; 4 car, 7 yds, 0 TD

Game Notes: Foles overall had a great game. He showed the accuracy that he displayed to the world once he took over for an injured Carson Wentz last year. The Eagles didn’t have the outcome they wanted but Foles played well nonetheless. Unfortunately for him, it was announced that Wentz was cleared for contact and will be starting this weekend.

Next Game: vs. Indianapolis Colts, Sept. 23

Reggie Gilbert, LB/DE, Green Bay Packers

Result/Score: Tie with Minnesota, 29-29

Game Stats: 1 tackle, 0.5 TFL, 0.5 sack

Season Stats: 3 tackles, 0.5 TFL, 0.5 sack

Game Notes: You see right ladies and gentlemen — the second tie in as many weeks. That, however, did not stop Reggie Gilbert from being disruptive. He only finished the game with one tackle, but it was a negative play for the Vikings. He also pressured Kirk Cousins two more times, causing both passes to be incomplete.

Next Game: at Washington Redskins, Sept. 23

Rob Gronkowski, TE, New England Patriots

Result/Score: Away loss to Jacksonville, 31-20

Game Stats: 2 rec, 15 yds, 0 TD

Season Stats: 9 rec, 138 yds, 1 TD

Game Notes: I truly believe that because the Jags did a great job of making Gronk a non-factor, the Pats lost. And you can’t say that about Gronk very often. It will be interesting to see how the dynamic will be now that the Patriots have acquired talented, but troubled, receiver Josh Gordon.

Next Game: at Detroit Lions, Sept. 23

Earl Mitchell, NT, San Francisco 49ers

Result/Score: Home victory against Detroit, 30-27

Game Stats: 2 tackles

Season Stats: 6 tackles

Game Notes: Mitchell continued his production from last week against Detroit. He didn’t record as many tackles as last week, but he was still disruptive. That is one aspect of his game, much like Gilbert, that makes him an effective d-lineman and will continue to keep him in the league.

Next Game: at Kansas City Chiefs, Sept. 23

Will Parks, S, Denver Broncos

Result/Score: Home victory against Oakland, 20-19

Game Stats: None

Season Stats: 2 tackles

Game Notes: Parks played against the Raiders but didn’t record any stats.

Next Game: at Baltimore Ravens, Sept. 23

Brooks Reed, DE, Atlanta Falcons

Result/Score: Home victory against Carolina, 31-24

Game Stats: None

Season Stats: 1 tackle

Game Notes: Reed was quiet once again. He didn’t record any stats against the Panthers.

Next Game: vs New Orleans Saints, Sept. 23
