Wildcat Wrap: Arizona soccer, volleyball enjoy winning weekends

Editor’s note: Every Monday we will be recapping the week that was around the UA athletic department in a feature called the Wildcat Wrap. Here is our first rendition of the year.

Summer is fading away and fall is blowing in, which means the Arizona Wildcats are back in action.

While most fans are salivating to see the UA football team on Saturday night against BYU, other sports are already bearing down on the field, court and links. Let’s see how they are doing. (If we missed anything, we encourage you to add it in the comment section below!)

Soccer

• Jill Aguilera scored in the 71st minute to lift the Wildcats to a big 1-0 road win against UC Irvine on Thursday. It was a must-win game, and the goal marked the second time in Aguilera’s career that she scored the game-winner. All the work she put in this offseason to improve her left foot paid off.
• UA capped the week with an impressive 6-0 win over Houston Baptist on Sunday night. Four players scored their first career goals.
• The win was No. 56 in Coach Tony Amato’s career, making him the winningest coach in program history. The Cats are 2-1 to start the season and head up to Tempe on Friday to face Southeast Missouri State as part of the Sun Devil Desert Classic.
• We caught up with former UA soccer player Charlotte Brascia to find out what it’s like to play professionally in Sweden.

Volleyball

• The ‘Cats started off their season by taking the championship at the Hornet Invitational by going 3-0. After beating CSUN and Utah State on Friday, they capped it off with a four-set win over host Sacramento State on Saturday. Senior outside hitter Kendra Dahlke was named the tournament’s MVP after posting 67 kills and 35 digs, while Devyn Cross and Julia Patterson also made the all-tournament team.
• Sophomore outside hitter Paige Whipple had eight kills in six sets, as she works her way back from an umbilical hernia.
• The Cats are back on the court this weekend in their home debut in the Cactus Classic. UA hosts Lipscomb on Friday morning.

Women’s Golf

• After capturing a national championship over the summer, Arizona golfers Bianca Pagdanganan and Yu-Sang Hou were back on the links at the 2018 Asian Games at Pondok Indah Golf and Country Club in Jakarta, Indonesia.
• Pagdanganan, playing for the Philippines, shot a 66 (-6) in her final round, and bested her opponent in a playoff to earn a bronze medal. Her play helped her team win a gold medal. Hou finished 27th overall and helped Chinese Taipei place seventh.

Football

• BYU will be starting 24-year-old senior Tanner Mangum against Arizona.
• Arizona’s No. 1 problem is its offensive line, wrote our Ryan Kelapire.
• On a more positive note, Scott Moran broke down Arizona’s strengths heading into the season.
• Two Sports Illustrated writers have vastly different opinions on the Wildcats.

Basketball

• Prized point guard Nico Mannion will have an in-home visit with Arizona’s coaching staff on Sept. 9.
• Ira Lee was cited for a “super extreme” DUI and later said he is “deeply sorry” about it.
• Keanu Pinder signed in Poland with Legia Warszawa
• The women’s team lost Valeria Trucco, one of their top 2018 recruits.

Baseball

• Former Wildcat Kevin Newman got his first MLB hit.

• Former UA outfielder Ashleigh Hughes graduated from the police academy.
