Texas A&M transfer Santino Marchiol no longer on Arizona’s roster

The Santino Marchiol era with the Arizona Wildcats is over before it ever really started, but not before making national headlines in his attempt to become immediately eligible after transferring from Texas A&M.

Arizona coach Kevin Sumlin said Monday that Marchiol was “informed this morning that he’s no longer on the team” but did not give a reason for his departure.

Earlier this week, The Dallas Morning News reported that Marchiol used an apparent racist term to describe some of his former teammates at Texas A&M.

A redshirt freshman linebacker who was part of Sumlin’s final recruiting class at A&M, Marchiol was one of two ex-Aggies who had transferred to Arizona this summer. The other was offensive lineman Robert Congel, who Sumlin said has yet to be declared eligible for this season.

Marchiol joined Arizona early in training camp while awaiting word about his eligibility, though a story by USA Today’s Dan Wolken in which he accused new A&M coach Jimbo Fisher and his staff of potential NCAA violations.
