Former Arizona QB Brandon Dawkins leaves Indiana program

Lost starting job to Peyton Ramsey last week

The Arizona Wildcats’ version of Wally Pipp has had another career roadblock, one that might put an end to his college football life.

Brandon Dawkins, who started 13 games at quarterback for Arizona including the first five last season, has left Indiana’s football program. He had gone there as a graduate transfer for his final year of eligibility.

”We wish (Dawkins) nothing but the very best, fine young man,” Indiana coach Tom Allen said Monday, per the Indianapolis Star. He said Dawkins told him he’s “going in a different direction and wanted to sort some things out.”

Dawkins’ departure comes less than a week after he failed to win Indiana’s starting QB job, losing out to sophomore Peyton Ramsey.

It was an injury suffered by Dawkins on the first drive of Arizona’s game at Colorado last October that forever changed the trajectory of the program. Khalil Tate was inserted and he responded by rushing for an FBS quarterback record 327 yards and became the starter the rest of the 2017 season.

Tate is now a Heisman Trophy candidate and a Sports Illustrated cover boy while Dawkins’ career may be over.
