Suspended Arizona safety Scottie Young Jr. to rejoin team, but won’t play in season opener vs. BYU

Suspended Arizona Wildcats safety Scottie Young Jr. will rejoin the team this week and will be allowed to participate in practice, but won’t play in the season opener vs. BYU, the UA announced Friday.

Arizona sophomore defensive back Scottie Young Jr. was involved in a misdemeanor incident last academic year that resulted in his suspension from all team-related activities. Mr. Young was also investigated by the Dean of Students for student code of conduct violations related to the incident. Since that time, he has completed disciplinary sanctions imposed by the University and separate penalties issued by the Athletics Department, which included removal from all team activities during spring and summer practice and conditioning. In addition, the Athletics Department has determined that he will be suspended for the BYU game. Mr. Young will rejoin the team this week and will be allowed to participate in practice activities.

Young was a key part of Arizona’s defense last season, playing in 10 games (nine starts) at free safety. The then-freshman finished season sixth on team with 53 tackles, and tallied 3.5 tackles for loss, intercepted one pass, and broke up another.

Young was arrested in connection with a domestic violence incident back in September, and had been suspended indefinitely since the spring. New head coach Kevin Sumlin had declined to provide any update on the defensive back.

While Young was a starter for the Wildcats in 2017, he will have to work his back his way back up the depth chart in 2018.
