Early projections predict Holiday Bowl for Arizona

The Wildcats would take on the Iowa Hawkeyes

The Arizona Wildcats have high expectations for this upcoming season.

Kevin Sumlin leads a core of young players coming off a pleasantly surprising 2017 season, and Arizona boasts one of the most favorable Pac-12 schedules in a year filled with mystery across the conference.

Most fans would consider 8-4 a successful season in year one of the Sumlin regime, and the thought of a Pac-12 South Championship isn’t just a pipe dream.

For now, Arizona figures to be somewhere in the middle according to CBS, as they project Arizona to land in the Holiday Bowl, going up against the Iowa Hawkeyes of the Big Ten.

The two teams have played each other 13 times, with Arizona holding a one-game lead in the series. The last time the two played was 2010, where Arizona hosted and stunned the No. 9 ranked Hawkeyes. However, that season ended with five straight losses, including a blowout loss to Oklahoma State in the Alamo Bowl.

Traditionally, the Holiday Bowl is the given to the No. 3 team in the Pac-12 behind the Rose Bowl and Alamo Bowl.

The Holiday Bowl is scheduled for Dec. 31 at 7 p.m. at the San Diego County Credit Union Stadium, home of the San Diego State Aztecs.

In total, there are seven Pac-12 teams projected to go bowling. CBS predicts Washington to win the conference, but just miss the College Football Playoffs, playing Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl. USC is slotted in the Alamo Bowl to take on West Virginia.

The rest of the projected Pac-12 match-ups are as follows

  • San Francisco Bowl ‚ Northwestern vs Utah
  • Hyundai Sun Bowl — Oregon vs North Carolina
  • Cactus Bowl — Iowa State vs California
  • Las Vegas Bowl — Colorado vs Fresno State
